Kim: windows xp: “the device can not be stopped right now. try again later”?
i have an external hard drive hooked up to my computer right now. I’m done with it and want to disconnect it, but when I click the device removal icon in the corner, it says “this device (volume F) cannot be stopped right now. try stopping the device again later. I waited 15 minutes and it still says that. why can’t it be stopped? it’s not in use. i don’t want to disconnect it without doing the whole “safely remove hardware” thing first.
would it be bad to shut down my computer with it still connected? then while it’s off, unplug it?

yanking it might corrupt any data being written to it or from it. close all of your windows on the machine and see if it can be ejected. A window that is simply open can cause this. Otherwise if your not doing anything with the device, just yank it.
ctrl-alt-del
click applications tab
close apps that are using the driveAnswer by C-Man
Try again after a few seconds… sometimes it takes a few attempts for the disconnect to take.
