Gessen: What’s this psychological syndrome associated with bosses not wanting to take vacations?
It describes bosses (managers, supervisors) who think that the whole operation will fall apart without them. A certain survey says that this is one of the reasons why majority of Americans take fewer vacations than the rest of the world. I heard this syndrome mentioned once, but I just can’t remember it right now. Anyone knows about this?
Serious knowledgeable answers only please.

It’s called back-stabber syndrome. They are afraid that when they get back the job will be gone, well, not the job but THEIR job. I’ve seen it in the USA and Mexico, so it’s maybe the same elsewhere. It probably started with mechanization.
Job security, afraid that if they leave even for a day, the company might actually be able to get along without them.
Also someone who is juggling the books or accounts comes to mind. They cannot take time off in case someone discovers that they have not been completely honest.
