Kate: What is the best method to study for a foreign language vocab quiz?
I have a Spanish vocabulary quiz on wenesday and I was wondering what is the best way to study for it? I have not done so well on vocab quizzes. Last quiz I got a C- and in others I’ve gotten Bs or Cs. How can I bring it to an A?

What I like to do is flash cards. You put the word in one side and the definition in the other side.

Flash cards can help but they can also hold you back from learning a the value of the word. Learning languages can be hard if you let them. Since this is a vocabulary quiz it shouldn’t be too difficult, hopefully they are mainly nouns and verbs. So I suggest making flashcards WITHOUT writing the definition on the back. Doing this puts you into total immersion of the language instead of constantly thinking about conjugation and all the things that are confusing. Then put those flash cards next to the things that they are in your house. For example, the word “la puerta” means the door, so tape a flashcard to your door and instead of calling it a door call it “la puerta”. Or your laptop or computer, tape a peice of paper or flashcard to your “portatil” or “computadora/ordenador”. I promise you that this will work if you try it and give it a chance. Do this with all the things in your house and add the gender to the noun so that you remember if it’s either “la” or “el”. I’ll list you things around the house to help you get started.
La puerta – The door
La cama – The bed
La habitacion/ El Cuarto – The bedroom
El espejo – The mirror
El armario – The closet
Follow these steps and I’m sure you’ll become very familiar with the words and their genders. With the verbs just do things that concide with them. For example jump when you think of “saltar”, sing when you think of “cantar”, dance when you think of “bailar” and so on. I live in Spain so I know how difficult it could be learning a language, it’s never easy but you do have to work hard if you want to be good at something. Best of luck to you!
