You have to get at least a certain score on the exam to get credit. Different colleges require that you get different scores. Most require at least a 3 in order to receive credit, but some require a 4. The scores are automatically sent to the colleges that you designate-I believe they are part of your transcript. My daughter’s went to her college automatically. CollegeBoard, which is the same company that does the SAT, handles the exams and the scores, so they send them.
To get credit on an AP exam you need to score a 3 or higher, but some schools require a 4 or 5. The college will receive your scores after you apply for the school.Answer by eri
Your colleges will receive your scores from the college board and decide whether or not to give you credit for them. Some will give credit for a score 3 or above, some only for a 4 or above.
And some don’t give credit for AP courses at all. In general, the more selective colleges will NOT accept AP courses for credit, no matter how well you did (my college didn’t give me credits for any of mine – scores 2, 3, 3, 3, and 5). However, they WILL let you use these courses to place out of the introductory courses in that field – say, in chemistry, calculus, or English. Even after getting a 2 on the AP calc exam (I managed to miss half a semester and never caught up), I didn’t have to take Calc I or II in college, going straight to Calc III.
