Haflinger Acre: How do you teach your dog to “shake”?
I really want my 12 week old Cavalier x Mini Aussie Shep to learn the trick “shake” but she’s not really getting it. She’s a fast learner and she already knows “sit” and “up.” Please give me some tips on how to teach her. Thanks!
I’ll try that, I like that idea!
Julie G, I’ve been using that method and it isn’t working.

I put a treat in my hand and made a fist.
I held it out to my dog and said “five”
The rule is to not open your hand to give the treat until your dog uses his paw to get it out.
My dog does it really well now. She went a bit over board though, now if there’s something in my hand, she’ll hit me with her paw to try to get it.
You have to make sure that your pup knows that this trick can only be used when you tell it to.
Answer by Julie G (Miss P. Culiar)Get your dog to sit in front of you and grasp it’s paw. Say “Shake” or “Paw” (or whatever command you choose) clearly while holding the paw and give the dog a treat/toy/praise or whatever incentive you use. Do that a few times. Then give the command and see if she lifts her paw herself. Give her the treat to reward her. Simple!Answer by Lori R
Hold a treat she likes in front of her nose. Pull the treat to one side, pulling her off balance until the opposite paw starts to come up. When the paw starts to come up, say “paw” or “shake”, reach down and grab the paw and give her the treat.
Repeat. Repeat. Repeat, saying the ‘magic’ word of ‘paw’ or ‘shake’ earlier and earlier.
At some point, she will realize that your grabbing the paw is what lets her have the treat and she will raise the paw to get the treat.
Answer by GinaAs in shake paws?
If so then I taught my dogs by actually lifting their paws up and saying shake then give them a treat.
I kept doing this about 4 times in a row about 8 times a day and after 3 days they both got it.
Now they do it to ‘gimme five’Answer by sweetiehart528
I have a pitt bull mix that knows commands in both english and spanish. We taught him by picking up his paw and saying “Mano” which means hand in Spanish. When I had his hand in mine I would give him lots of praise first and then a treat. We did this repeatedly for a few days in short spurts ( like 5 or 6 times in a row, 4 times a day), if you do it for too long they get bored and confused. Anyway after a day or two of that he started to do it on his own when we would say the magic word. Then we took away his treat for it. After he had the command of Mano down pact we started saying it in English and Spanish and now he does it in either language. You have to be patient with everything you teach him. Good luck.Answer by TodayLucy
get a tasty snack. I used tiny pieces of cheese.
I would hold onto my beagles paw and shake it while saying shake and I’d give him the snack afterward I’d repeat this until he did it on his own without me having to give him the snack.

Answer by BYBS abuse their petsI have trained it to a dog before by first teaching the dog sit.
While the dog is in a sitting position, with one hand pick up a paw say “shake”, while feeding a treat with your other hand… then praise.
Just keep doing this repeatedly, several times a day. The dog should eventually get the idea and start offering his paw.
