str8ctry: How much is a feasible asking price for a quarter pony in Ohio?
I have a red dunn mare that is about five or six years old that I have had a few years. We had planned to break her to ride and have has a kid pony. She is just horse sized but is quarter pony- no papers or anything. She is a sweet gal but needs worked with. She has had kids on her and lead around but doesn’t care for adults d/t the weight increase. Is minorly green broke. I’m needing to get rid of her and wondered how much is a feasible asking price for her? We live in Ohio.

Is she broke walk trot canter? Does she spook often? If she has just had kids led on her- you can probably get $ 600 or so. If she is trained walk trot canter for kids, $ 1000. If she has gone on any type of trails or shows, then $ 1500. I would not say more than that. Most people will be very iffy about buying a 5-6 yr old horse that is barely broke, esp for a kids horse.
If I were you, I would try to find someone to put a couple months on her for training. Even a local neighbor kid with moderate experience can help you out (and work for cheap). You can get a lot better offer when she is at least green broke.
I am in WI by the way.
Answer by MelanieI am in California (lots of overly priced horses here!) and I would probably say $ 500 to $ 1000. I’d say $ 1500 would be for a pony that has over 120 undersaddle who can carry a competent rider walk/trot/canter. Here in CA you could get away with highway robbery and sell her as a project pony for $ 2000 as is. Advertise her as a POTENTIAL childs horse and make sure the ad is targeting adults and teenagers rather than 10 year olds.
She needs to be able to handle increased weight because the more accomplished riders who will be able to effectively train her will most likely be larger. If you know of any teenagers that just want to ride give them a percentage of the sale price if they help get her in shape. Once she is more suitable for kids then the price will be able to increase.
Answer by Doei live in canada so it may be diferent, but a 6 yr old that is green broke probly wont get you more than 500 – 1000 UNLESS she is a prospect and GREAT mover. then you might be able to get 2000 or 3000. But by six now she’s already had time to pick up many bad habits that the new owner has to get out of her and she isn’t even broke. Don’t mean to be harsh but thats how she goes.
