Required? Not really – #1 focus should be on school. Then if they could help out, it may be needed. Parents should both work, maybe 2 jobs each, too.

Answer by Crazeddoglady
If they are doing well in school and can maintain a part-time job without it adversely impacting their studies, then they should be able to buy their own clothes, contribute to gas money (especially if they drive), buy their own junk food and soda and pay for their own entertainment. Beyond that, as long as they contribute by helping with household chores I think they’re doing their part.

Answer by beaver
yes and no parents are still responsibly for them until they18 but should be teaching kids responsibility like work ethic

Answer by Judy
Absolutely not.
They have to save up for a car, and possible college expenses. Teach them how to save for what they want. The poor spend everything they have, the rich know how to save. That is the only difference.

Answer by Mike D
In my opinion no. The parents should take care of their teenage children, and I think that’s too much pressure to be putting on a teenager. The parents need to pay for the necessities. However, if times are tight then depending on how old the teenager is it would be a good time to sit down with them and explain what’s going on, and explain that they should get a job to pay for a few of their own things because times will be tight. For example even though the parents should pay for food, if the teen wants to go out to eat with his buddies every Friday night the parents shouldn’t be required to pay for that if times are tight. Clothes are being bought at Wal-Mart unless the teen wants to put in their own money to shop at the Gap.
