MildDiarrhea: What would happen if I responded to a scammer email?
So I got an email that was definitely some scammer trying to trick me into thinking i could get money from her. It was one of those “I’m coming from Kenya with tears in my eyes. My father was the former Kenya road minister and got in a plane crash. I found a briefcase with documents…” ones. So I’m not really interested in the money or anything, but what happens if I respond to the email?

You respond with some personal information that they can use to steal your identity. Within weeks you would receive notices saying you have maxed out credit cards. The next time you travel, you could be informed that you are on the ‘no fly’ list, etc.
You will get a followup email asking for you to pay some money to show that you are honest. That is the last you will hear from them unless they ask for more. You will never receive anything unless it is a counterfeit check.
They may also ask for your checking account to deposit the money into. You may find in a few days that all your money was taken out. The bank will not help you since you authorized the transactions.

Answer by Kittysue1 – your name will be sold to a Mugu List and you’ll be inundated with scam emails
2 – you will be targeted with infected emails that will launch viruses/spyware/keyloggers when you open them
3 – your email address will be spoofed as the return address on their next scam
ONLY reply to a scammer from a dedicated email acct that is not used for any other purposes. Make sure you are routing your messages through a proxy server so they can’t track you by IP address. Only use a Mac so you don’t get infected. Don’t have any contacts in your mailing list that can be hijacked. Never give your real name, address, birthdate, phone number or any other information
