JStrat: What is the best pet for someone with allergies?
I would like a pet I can actually pet. I love dogs and cats, but have found my allergies and asthma act up around them – are there certain breeds I should look for? I’ve tried fish and lizards, but they just aren’t very pet-like, though I enjoy having them around. Are there dogs and cats that are better for people with allergies? Maybe certain short-hair breeds? Or other pets that are great? Thank you for any help! 🙂

actually long hair breeds of dog have less dander than short hair. so you could go with a shitzu or something like that.Answer by dplovincalvinist
i’ve got the exact same problem. still have a dog, but she stays outside. i’ve heard that chihuahuas and/or poodles are fine for people with allergies, but the most severe reaction i’ve ever had was because of a chihuahua. so good luck finding one.
i had hamsters for awhile. you can tame them to where you can play with them, so that would be neat. gerbils too. if you want to go for more unusual, you could get a ferret, or some type of bird. they’re both cute pets (the ferret more than the bird).Answer by ♥ cutie ♥
I don’t know about cats, but for dogs most poodles are hypoallergenic (don’t cause allergies).Answer by R.R
How about a short haired rabbit, or how about a hamster? even a bald cat or shaved cat/dog would work, most people are allegric to the pet dander which is in their fur.. . .
Good luck and best wishes!
Answer by pizzagirlDon’t get a guinnea pig, many people have allergies to them. You should go to your local shelter and try hanging out with a different furry each time you go there. Then, you can tell which ones don’t affect you as much.Answer by Biker
Actually you can get a dog or cat and treat the dander that causes the allergy attacks.
Local pet stores sell all kinds of treats or additives for the water that help to minimize or canel out the animals dander.
Ask a local vet for the best brand and then go from there.Answer by hunnybunches06
Maybe a fish. It depends on what ur allergic to. cause if ur allergic to fur on cats and dogs then u can get a bird.Answer by Sarah
Golden Doodles are a combination of Golden Retriever and Poodle. Most people who are allergic to dogs don’t react to poodle fur, and golden doodles are cuddly and cute like retrievers. Labradoodles are the same, except with labs and poodles. Good luck!Answer by the fat guy lol

You want to look for pets that don’t shed very much. My son has allergies and we have 2 boxers. They do shed but not very much. Not like a long hair one, anyway. I will have to look up the website…I can’t remember it right now….but they have like a questionaire for you to fill out and it will help you decide what animal would best for you. That is what I used. Hope this helps.Answer by pooh

My husband has asthma & allergies & is very allergic to cats, but we had 2 Irish Setter’s & they never bothered him.
Also had a small Jack Russel terrier & she didn’t bother him either.
I have pet rats & still no problem.Answer by kafka2003
A pet rock…. Just kidding. I know that poodles are hypoalergenic (don’t cause allergies, or shed). There is alos a new “breed” called labradoodles, that are Lab and Poodle hybrids that are great dogs.
I’m not a poodle guy myself, but I do like the labradoodles.

Try dogs that have hair instead of fur, like Maltese or poodles. I’m also really allergic to furry animals. I think I’ll try to go to the source of the problem instead though and get acupuncture treatments. Apparently they really work for allergies.Answer by roo_vel

I was tested and given shots for my alergies and was allegic to the shots, so I use Montelukast every day and have a Pomerainian dog. Cats still cause me to sneeze.Answer by DeeDee
Hate to tell you but i don’t think you will find a pet that won’t trigger your allergies!!!
My son has allergies, takes shots weekly, and we have cats and the only reason why i have kept the cats is his allergist told me that since we had the cats since he was born then there was really no need to get rid of them.. We do however take our cats, believe it or not, to a groomer once a week to get bathed in a shampoo that helps control the dander.. that is usually what triggers the allergies not the hair.. so you might want to check around with groomers, a dog can be bathed with i’m sure the same shampoo that would help with the allergies..
Now as far as for the asthma i heard that there is a breed of dog that is a good for people with asthma.. i just can’t recall the breed!!!Answer by Kira M
try one of these creepy little things…

How about a sphinx cat or a devon rex…shorthaired cat seems to be less shedding than others….very expensive though……or a mexican hairless dog..thing is..are you allergic to the saliva, pelt or danders? Cats always mark with their mouths regardless of hair…..hmmm look at what component of the animal you are allergic to…pelt, saliva or dander or all three..I am allergic to all three of those things in our cat but only mildly. I cannot groom, clean the litter box but can feed and pet occcasionally. I take Allegra and Singular and keep him out of my bedroom. We dust and vacuum often, it helps but I am not severely allergic…asthmatic problems only occur when I groom or if he’s been sneaking around and has been on the bed!Answer by Cowgirl
There are hypoallergenic breeds of dogs, which means they have hair instead of fur so they don’t shed. Poodles, terriers, bichon frises, and shih tzus are some of the ones that shed little to no dander and don’t shed.Answer by littlechrismary
What about a hairless breed of dog? I wonder if that would work. https://www.bigdogboutique.com/

There are several cat and dog breeds that are hairless. I know though that dander is what causes allergies and am not sure if hairless pets have dander.Answer by Alysse
Any of the hairless dog and cat breeds are good. They take a little getting used to but are really sweet pets. Poodles are also good, but please, please, don’t get a poodle cross breed. There are so many health problems related to them because of the crossing.(You cross one type of dog that’s already prone to problems, with another that is also prone, and you double the problem)
Look into Devon Rex or Sphinx cats, Chinese Crested, American Hairless Terriers, Mexican Hairless dogs, or Peruvian Inca Orchid dogs. There is also a breed of hairless guinea pigs. And of course hairless rats. Birds are also good companions. They are very affectionate is raised properly, so find a reputable breeder, not pet store bought.Answer by Cory H.

An angora cat has a different type of coat than a regular cat. Allergy sufferers often find they can have one of these cats. There is also a type of dog that I can’t recall that is the same. A vet or animal organization may be able to help you.Answer by pk
It sounds like you really want a cat or dog. My sister-in-law has a Shih-Tzu (which has hair, not fur) and her allergy problems are minimal. You might try the websites below for other suggestions. Good luck!Answer by ericka1star
hi
i know this isn’t answering your question, but i just wanted you to know there are shampoos out there for dogs and cats that you use monthly to control YOUR ALLERGIES. most animals need to be bathed that often anyway. even though you have allergies, you may want to borrow a friend’s dog or cat for a day and ask if it would be alright to use the shampoo on them…at most you will be able to tell in an hour if it works or not. you shouldn’t be sneezing or have itchy throat or watery eyes if the shampoo works. then if the shampoo doesn’t work for you, you won’t be stuck suffering with an animal.
these are some of the products i know about

i, myself, don’t feel the cost is high if you really want a pet. if you think it is a little too high, check on ebay or pet wholesalers. i hope this helps!
good luck!
Answer by Rodeo, W.J. RIf I were you, I would research Lasa Opsa. I think I spelled it right. They are a small to medium dog breed that is renowned for (not having fur but hair). They have worked very well for my cousin who has pet allergies.
