asdf: What is a good university or college for me?
I live in California. I am looking at colleges in mostly the Northern US and Canada but I have an open mind for universities abroad. Right now I’m planning to major in history. I’d like the university to be in a nice city or town, with a nice campus and living areas. I’d like a smaller university, but I won’t automatically say no to a larger one. Scholarship opportunities would also be great.

Since you are interested in scholarships, you might want to take advantage of the “automatic scholarship” which California residents receive by paying the lower in state tuition fees at California public universities. Consider the University of California, Davis; Sonoma State University (where I took a fine history major): and Chico State University.
There is no reason to go out of state for undergraduate work in history unless you are admitted to an Ivy or a similar private college or university with nearly a full ride scholarship. Also apply to the Ivies, Amherst, Williams, Swarthmore, etc. if you have a record which might result in admission, but remember that almost all scholarships are based on need.

There are several free online services that help you find schools that are already accepting students with your credentials. Go to the website, enter your personal information and SAT or ACT scores, tell them where [State or area or even by zip code] you want to go to college and what majors you may be interested in, and see what comes up. Then, make sure that you apply to at least three of the schools likely to accept you. College admissions can be cruel at times, and you definitely want to have some choice.
Make sure that one of the places you apply is in your State publicly supported system. Finances have a way with interfering in your plans and you need to have a fall-back position.
