Valentina: What makes the University of Michigan so Highly Ranked?
I am planning on attending garduate school to get my Masters degree in social work (I have a bachelors degree in psychology). I live in Michigan and the main schools that I am looking at are Wayne State University and the University of Michigan- Ann Arbor. U of M has been ranked as the #1 school of social work in the country for 10 years straight.
Why is the U of M ranked so highly? Would I be better off spending more money going to the U of M or spending less and going to Wayne State? Would I have a better chance at getting a job with the U of M degree or will they both be equal?
Thanks.
U of M pros: Higher ranked, more prestigious.
Wayne State pros: Closer to where I live, costs less.
Which is a better option?

If you have a shot to go to a top 10 grad school in your profession and it is a good fit for you, by all means do it.
Going to a higher ranked program will open a lot more doors for you.
As for what makes U of M a great school — a lot of it is related to the choices that the state of Michigan made. They decided to have one college within the state’s university system that would be more selective than the others. They gave that school enough money to attract the best faculty.
Wayne State is less selective and has faculty who may be good — but are not research stars.
Several states have done used this plan — Virginia, California and North Carolina are examples. Each state has one magnet school that is far superior ot the other schools in the state.
Other states, like Minnesota and Ohio decided to keep their major universities open to a larger group of people and are a little less selective. Because of this, they are also larger.
