John B: What house facing allows maximum afternoon sun in the summer?
Thinking of buying a house with a pool in the backyard and want afternoon sun in the summer – should the house face east or south? In the northern hemisphere of course and more specifically the s.f. bay area. Maybe it depends how big the house behind is also but assume it’s not right on top up against the fence.

You indeed want your house facing south. That way your pool is in the back yard and facing north. It gets sun in the morning from the east, and in the evening from the west. I would also check to see the shadow line of your house and be sure to put the pull at least that far away from the house.Answer by Don
If I understand you correctly, you want your backyard to be in the most sunny spot for afternoon sun, meaning I think you want to have your best, widest view of the setting sun. That would require the front side of your house to face east.Answer by Bert C
For maximum total daily sun, it (the back yard) should face due south. For maximum AFTERNOON sun it should face southwest or south southwest.Answer by lovinthe88
south is always best
