Unorthodox: What would happen if I built an unconventional house that did not meet the building codes?
I am interested in a building a house using non-traditional and unconventional building methods. This house probably would not meet the local building codes. I already understand that securing any necessary financing to build the house would be difficult and that it would also be more difficult to insure the house once built. What I am not sure of is how the local government would react if I built a house without any effort to satisfy the building codes. Would there be any legal action taken against me? Would they try to prevent me from occupying my own home?

First, they would not allow you to move in. Before you can move into new construction, the local gvpt issues a permit that shows that the home meets building code. Without this permit, you can’t live there.
NO, you can’t just move in. They can have the building condemned and remove you from the building.
And in some cases, if it’s determined that it is unsafe, have it torn down and then sue you for the cost.
Answer by James OThe property has to be inspected and if its unsafe to a point that cant be reasonably fixed it will be condemned. Why on earth would you want to build a house that dosent fill safety requirements anyway? Listen, what ever your reason there is probably a solution. email me and I can give you detailed info on a company that you can call. They will give you free consultation on your project up front. Most people cheat and are never caught. The city inspectors are already overburdened. If a neighbor complains now, or in 5 years, there is no process to “permit” a structure that was built without a permit. You might be required to pay a fine and then tear down the entire structure..
