Call the police. Fraud is a criminal charge.
Print out copies of all emails he sent you and bring them along with the check and the original envelope to your local police station as this is a money mule scam
Since the scammer knows where you live, so they don’t threaten you and your family, write back to say that you tried to deposit the check but the bank said it was drawn on a closed account and they voided it and are sending the check back to his bank’s fraud department. Say that you cannot accept another check and he must pay you in cash and if he can’t pay in the next 3 days you found another buyer. Then ignore any future emails. Unfortunately you’ll probably start to get tons of spam as the scammers will often sell your address to other scammers and spammers
This is why Craigslist tells you to only deal with people you can meet face to face and that checks and money orders will be fake

Never give your home address to anyone on Craigslist – people have been targeted with home invasion robberies and one man was even killed after giving their address to a fake buyer. And never deal with anyone who cannot pay you in cash and pick up the item from you in a public well lit location. I usually meet at a local Starbucks but any fast food, public library, Walmart, hotel lobby, etc with other people around is safe
Answer by JakeThose check frauds seem to be commonly perpetrated from Nigeria, they also commonly hire secret shoppers to “test” Western Union services. You can bet they are hard to track down and that you are just one of hundreds they are phishing for responses from, I would just igore it and remain vigilant.
One TV investigation program actually went to Nigeria to watch the guy collect his payment at the western union office (that big guy could run) a 20/20 report detailed someone innocently working as a Virtual Payment Processor working from home, following instructions to buy a check writing kit at an office supply store and mailing checks to a list of people, effectively removing the scammers fingerprints from the operation.

First, file a web complaint with the Internet crime complaint center:

Second, if you really want to pursue this further, contact your local police and file a formal complaint for mail fraud. FBI will take over the case and they might want to interview you once more.
