Redsawdom: What are your thoughts on the sanctity of marriage?
Marriage is a sacred bond, held by a husband and wife.
Is it sacred for people who get drunk and marry on a whim in Vegas?
Is it sacred for young women who marry old men for money?
Is it sacred in reality shows, where people compete to marry each other?
Is it sacred in un-loving relationships, where a spouse is abused?
Is it sacred when forced upon two people, simply because they slept with each other?
Is homosexual marriage really that damaging to the “holy and sacred” thing that is marriage?

There is nothing outside of church/religion that is sacred.
Marriage is very much a legal contract.
And it’s a contract which anyone foolish enough who wishes to enter should be able to do so.

Yes as are all the things you mentioned above. All of them were caused by selfish reasons when marriage is meant to teach you to be unselfish. Love is selfless by its very nature so marriage which foundation is supposed to be love is supposed to be too. However people are selfish (for the most part). That is why the divorce rate is so high now, people think only of what makes them feel good about themselves about pleasure and self glorification. Marriage teaches you that life is more about then just your self that is why when immature people realize they have to love someone else besides them selves they destroy the very thing that could save them. Beside the fact that Marriage is the seed bed of spirits and Man is representative of truth and woman love, together they represent the very essence of all life and innocence. Wisdom and goodness. That is why marriage is sacred it represents true love. It is destroyed by selfish love.
Also it was a religious belief before a state belief since belief systems have been along much longer then governments who issue out contracts for the betterment of society which goes back to my main point, even the government knows marriage is important to the whole. Important to civilization and thus people living in peace.
Answer by TJLove is Love no matter even if it is between the same sex. The fools and bigots that would site a over 2000 year old book to say that is wrong are a bunch of fools. Why can’t the human race get past such discrimination?Answer by Rosey
It’s a fecking joke. Gays should be allowed to marry, too, if they want to be as miserable as the rest of us.Answer by Skeptikitten
Marriage is a legal and civil contract, according to the government. If it was, in fact a “sacred bond” then the government wouldn’t require legal paperwork for it, and would recognize “marriages” performed with religious ceremony but without paperwork. It would also mean the non-religious couldn’t get married, and I’m proof that’s not true.
I wish people would stop calling it “homosexual marriage” or “gay marriage”, though. When the first blacks in America were allowed to get married, they didn’t call it “black marriage”. When the first interracial couple won their Supreme Court case and got married, they didn’t call it “interracial marriage”. It’s just “marriage”. That’s all- the same for everyone.
Answer by AmiAccording to Genesis 1-11, marriage is defined as one man and one woman. Though society may try to redefine relationships, they are incorrect. There are two circumstances in which a man and a woman would have grounds for divorce:
1. Infidelity.
2. If a spouse dies.
That’s it. No matter how hard our circumstances are God has ordained it that a man and a woman work towards a loving relationship with each other AND Him. He really didn’t leave a whole lot of loopholes.
Answer by UnverisimilitudeMarriage is only good for tax breaks and health insurance, Gays have the right to these things. They have the right to be just as miserable as everybody else. Not to mention to get married costs a crap load of cash and i don’t think we should be complaining if they want to dump a bunch of money into our nations economy.Answer by Fred
The sanctity of marriage is a goofy notion held by fanatics who get divorced in droves and yet want to blame others for their personal problems.Answer by Mommy Honey
Yes, marriage is still sacred in those instances. Marriage is a sacrament instituted by God. Between a man and a woman. What people do with it is another story. Doesn’t change the institution. Homosexual behavior is abominable in the eyes of our Creator. Therefore, to the Christian anyways, homosexual marriage cannot be recognized. If you want to have a union that is recognized by the State for tax purposes, so be it. But other things are an abomination too like adultery, fornication, etc. I’m as guilty as the next guy. But, I’m just representing God’s institution, not my own bad choices or opinions.Answer by CC
None of what you mentioned, including homosexual marriage, affects the sanctity of my marriage.
Let people decide for themselves what marriage means to them.
Answer by CurtisYes it is. What we see and understand is not what God knows. Even a bad marriage is sacred in God’s eyes. You should know that homosexual life style is a sin amd can only lead a person further from God and further from salvationAnswer by The GMC
You highlighted all the ways in which the ways marriage is being desecrated. I’m not sure why that makes further desecration ok.
Notice the context is about the sanctity of marriage, not the legality of marriage. You are hearing my religious opinion, not my libertarian one.
Answer by Light and TruthMarriage is a sacred bond between a Husband and a Wife. Homosexuality is not. Call it what you want, “marry” and do as you please. Is it perfect? No. Is Homosexual hooking perfect? No. But the institution is not in question, it is the people who act within the bonds of marriage. That does not make marriage bad.Answer by robert p
Marriage is and has been a sacred institution for thousands of years. It is not atheists, homosexuals and others to usurp what marriage is to what they demand it to be.Answer by idlenessss
I view marriage as much more than, and somewhat different to, a simple bond between husband and wife.
With a marriage, you are both bringing a new person into both of your families…and more if you chose to have children. This changes everything…
With a simple bond between two people, you can do just about as much without marriage as with it. You can even have a sugar daddy without marrying him….in fact I imagine it would work better…since if you marry him, now your fimilies are involved, and they may have different ideas about where his money should be going…k?
The main point behond marriage is to have children…you are making your parents grandparents, your brothers uncles, etc. This is important stuff to all those people. They should be involved and there should be some ceremony which ensures they are involved.
Because the marriage extends beyond simply the two people involved, it is also less important what exactly those people’s relationship is like…for example with the un-loving relationships etc.
But for the same reason it obviously is not something you take lightly, and do on a drunk whim, or because you slept with someone.
Gay marriage is consistent in every way with the more ‘traditional’ point behind marriage. Its pretty common for gay people to commit with another person for life…for their families to know eachother…I know from experience that it feels akwkard not to be able to say that the gay member of your family is not married to the guy he has lived with for 20 years, the guy who shows up at thanksgiving, etc.
Answer by Coram DeoIt is the foundation of our society and when it is held cheap and denigrated as illustrated in your list, then it is a sign of our crumbling society, and our deteriorating morals and values.
When you attack the core of our society – the Mum and Dad morality and values of our parents and grand-parents then you destroy our families and our children lose their way in a world without objective right and wrong – everything becomes relevant to the individual alone and ethics, morality and social values are dead.
