JC: What age can a Rottweiler puppy convert from puppy food to normal dog food?
I have a rottweiler puppy who is now 6 months old. She is on Bakers puppy food (which states its up to 24 months old (2yrs)). I am wondering at what age can she go onto regular dog food, is it at 2yrs old or can it be sooner?

I usually start switching mine at about 1yr, usually I’ll mix adult and puppy for a couple months. Puppy food will make older dogs gain too much. But, that doesn’t mean stop. Ask your vet, they might suggest staying on it till 2yrs for the nutrients due to the dog being a big breed.

Yes it can be sooner (both my dogs are almost a year and I had to switch them because they were going through insane amounts of food and getting fat even though I rigorously exercise them) but if possible it’s best to feed them puppy food until 24 months because of the specific nutrients they are getting. If you want to switch her find out the ingredients of her food now and compare it to the ingredients of adult dog food and see if there are any with the same ingredients and then there won’t be much of a change.

A puppy of any breed should stay on puppy food until a year old at least then you can start by mixing adult food to puppy food half and half for a few months then go to full adult food.

Well, actually, since rottweilers a large breed dog, your puppy should be on a large breed puppy food until she is about 18 months old. It helps their bones and joints and keeps them from growing too fast. It’s really a good idea to switch her (slowly so no GI upset) and large breed dogs do not stop growing until about 18 months old. larger breed dogs develope more slowly than small or medium sized dogs and can take up to 2 years to fully develope, so they need to stay on puppy food longer. larger dogs, such as your rotty, should stay on puppy food (assuming your feeding her large breed puppy food) for 1 1/2 to 2 years, rather than 1 year like smaller dogs. i switched mine over when he was 1 1/2, but probably should haved waited until 2.
