I got a new cat today and he is 2 years old. And I have a 5 year old dog. The dog has been around cats a lot but we haven’t had a cat in like 4 months but at first the dog chased the cat. But now the dog is trying to be friendly but the cat keeps growling and hissing at it when it gets close. Well the cat has never ever been around dogs so how can I make them be more friendly with out them killing each other?

to stop em frm fighting, put em in separate kennels. try to minimize rivalry. dont pet 1 in the presence of anthr.

They will get used to each other, but you might have to retrain the dog not to chase the cat.

You let them be and keep an eye on the dog when it is checking the cat out. The cat will more than likely adapt. It is in the state of shock being in a new home and has to deal with a new dog (to the cat) on top of it.

My cat has been around small dogs and I brought in this 50 pound puppy, the cat was NOT HAPPY, but after 3 or 4 weeks, the cat will lay on the floor while the dog is towering over him playing with him.

Also try laying on the floor petting the kitty and the dog at the same time. It worked for us in the past .

I have had the same situation. Now my dog knows that she’s not allowed to kill the cat and the cat knows that she’s not supposed to hiss at the dog. When they start, a stern voice usually stops the fighting. Pick one up and pet the other so they know that there is no favoritism.

Baby , its nice a and difficult question its like a lion and goat
but i can give a suggestion , if u want to make them friendly ,food should be serve together (cat and dog at the same time ) i know initially cat would be reluctant to enjoy the presence of dog after some she will enjoy . n i am sure about that !

The cat will need time to get used to the dog, especially since the dog chase the kitty when they first met!

If you can get your dog to “ignore” the cat, meaning not react when the cat is in the area, this will give the cat the opportunity to sniff the dog and otherwise check the dog out on the cat’s terms. It would help if the dog was also not jumping around or acting hyper when the cat is near. If your dog does calm down around the cat, eventually the cat will realize the dog isn’t a threat and will stop hissing and growling. Our dog Molly, who passed over the rainbow bridge in January of this year, liked our cats and would groom one of them if the cat would stand still for it.

Do a web search on how to introduce a cat to your house and to other pets. Most recommend that you should keep the kitty in a separate room for a week or two (with frequent visits and play and toys and food and litter box, etc) until he gets used to the household sounds and smells. They’ll check each other out by sniffing under the door. Allow supervised visits after a couple days, but don’t be surprised if there’s still hissing/growling. It can take a few months for them to get used to each other. They may or may not become friends, but they’ll get used to each other and develop a routine. Sounds like the dog is nice though so I’m sure they’ll work it out!

When I first got a cat my big german shepard chased it around all of the time I used to catch ’em fiting all the time untill about after 2 years they got used to each other now they get alone fine

I have 2 dogs and 4 cats. They all pretty much get along. As they live together they will learn their limitations with each other. They may not actually get along, but they will learn to respect each other. It does seem to take cats longer to adapt than it does dogs. It just takes time.

When you get a new animal it’s always best to put the new one in a crate or kennel and then place him on the floor and let the other animals come and investigate him. This way the new animal does not feel threatened or scared of the others. Makes sure to supervise though :]

Just leave them alone. Let them settle their own disputes and establish their own pecking order. It might take a few weeks, but don’t run everytime you hear one start to squawk.

Unfortunately the only way I know to get them used to each other is to just let them get used to each other. It will take time but usually they will get comfortable with each other. Just keep an eye on them when they are around each other until they are both comfortable.

It will take a while for them to work out thier issues. My cat is 5 yrs old, and my puppy is 6 months old. The puppy so wants to be the cats best friend. But my cat was very reluctant. They are now kind of friends. My cat will smack her in the head somedays, but other days she is licking her. But it took about 2 months before my cat would even give an inch.

You have to get them when they are just puppies and kittens so they live their life together or buy them from someone who did that.

If possible keep them in separate rooms for about a week so they can get used to each other’s scent. Then try letting them be together for brief times when you are there to supervise.
Gradually increase the time they are together and pretty soon they will at least build up a tolerance for each other and may even become friends.

Separate them for awhile in a way that they can still see and smell each other, then little by little let the cat be around the dog. It may take some time because this is not a kitten you are dealing with but a full grown cat who has never been around dogs. So be prepared that they never actually get along but learn to tolerate each other.

just leave them alone and don’t interfere,(that is unless someone is really getting hurt). they will each set their own boundaries.they mostly just make alot of noise, and chase each other. i’ve always had dogs and cats together and they either became best friends(mostly the case) or just avoided each other.

If you think your up to the chalange train your dog to not chase the cat.Or if you really want a chalange you could try training the cat . But I think youll have better luck with the dog.Also stop trying to find ways to make your cat like the dog because you cant make a cat do any thing.Always remeber when teaching a cat somthing new you have to convince the cat it was there idea not yours.After you have train your dog to ignor the cat try puting cat treats near the dog so the cat will see the dog as a sorce of treats .Two things to reamber the dog must be trained frist and the useing treats to get the cat to like the dog only works if the cat is willing to work for the treat.Also somtime all you can do is wait for them to figure things out for them selves.
