I have sky plus and an x box 360 but my home cinema does not have an optical in part. Is there any other way to connect my sky box and 360 to the home cinema so that i can get surround sound??

You would need optical-to-coaxial convertors. They’re fairly common, most places should carry them.

There currently are three methods to get surround sound. Optical, coaxial and HDMI. HDMI is a very recent development and a lot of surround sound equipment does not yet support this. Optical and coaxial have been around for years now. However it appears that coaxial (rca plug) is more popular for low end equipment. There are convertors out there that will take optical input and change it to coaxial and vice versa.

My older DVD player only had coaxial output and my surround sound only had optical inputs! lol I bought a new DVD player!

If your sky or xbox have regular rca-style left/right audio cables (red and white), you can still use that to enjoy surround sound. It just wont be dolby digital, instead, it would be dolby pro-logic or pro-logic II.
