Sarah: How serious can parrot mouth be in a horse?
I am not looking to breed the horse. It would just be for riding. She has had parrot mouth all her life and hasn’t had problems with it. But her owner hasn’t had anything done for her teeth in over 6 years and they are worn down and gums seem a little discolored. Other than this it is a great horse but i don’t want to put a bunch of money into medical bills. What should i think about the horse?

A parrot mouth is not a good thing. His upper jaw was longer than his lower one, meanting that a bit won’t fit as well and may cause some problems.
However, my big concern is the teeth themselves. Not doing anything for 6 years is awful and if the teeth are worn down, your horse is going to have a hard time chewing. Hay will need to be soaked. You will need to make a gruel of the feed. These teeth will not get better.
The discolored gums could be gum disease, as bad for horses as it is for humans.
Equine dentistry should be done on a regular basis – at least yearly. However, this horse has had so little care and so many oral problems that you would literally be spending thousands of dollars and would never get his mouth in shape.
If you really still want to buy this horse, please, please, please have a vet, preferably one who does equine dentistry, look at this horse. He will be able to tell you just how much trouble the horse’s mouth is going to be – I’m no expert, but his mouth sounds pretty bad.
Answer by Taylorim not sure how serious this is but if sshes lived with it all her life she should be fine
haha if ur in a bad mood or need a stress relever watch me and my friend im the one in the yellow
Answer by SunnyIf you are really interested in this horse get a vet out and a dentist (if your vet doesn’t do that sort of thing) They can let you know what problems and what costs your looking at in the future. Worst case scenario then is don’t buy the horse best case they might have a relatively easy prognosis on how to fix him up a bit and you wont be too much out of pocket.
Good Luck and get it checked out before you make a decision!
