Mal: How can i get my puppy to stop peeing in her crate?
I put my 6 month old puppy in her crate while I am gone at work. She is only in her crate for about 4 hours at a time before someone else gets home to let her out. Her crate is only big enough for her to stand up and move around a little. Its the size the vet recommended so im sure its not too big. I have tried giving her treats in her crate and thats just not working. I let her out before and after I put her in the crate. I know its not her fault yet but I just dont want her to have to sit in her pee while I am gone. After she pees in her crate I clean it out really well. I know pet stores sell sprays to keep puppies from chewing on things but do they sell a spray to make puppies not want to pee in their crates? She does have a sheet in her crate I dont want to have to take it out but I think that may be part of the reason she is peeing in there.
She is a dachshund puppy. I have had her for a little over a month. She does not seem to have any other issues and has been to the vet at least 2 times since I have gotten her. I was told that 4 hours should not be too long for her to hold it. She does not have any water in her crate only a treat.

ya maybe
She just cant hold it for 4 hours. She is a puppy. She will eventually be able to hold it, but it takes time. There is no way to get her to stop peeing in there except to not leave her in there that long.Answer by Redyre Rottweilers
What breed is this? How long have you had her? Any other issues? Does she have water inside her crate? How about bedding? Is she housetrained otherwise?Answer by Peyton
The absolute most your puppy can hold it is 7 hours and that is pushing it. If your puppy is a small dog then it cuts down to more like 5. If it is just tinkle pick up her water at 8pm and only allow her a small amount in the morning. Be sure to go to your vet to make sure she is not having a urinary tract problem and watch her to make sure this isnt some sort of separation anxiety deal.Answer by hopflower
Most animals do not like to urinate where they live. Four hours is wayyy too long for a puppy. The puppy needs to go out every hour (or be given the chance) to the same place to urinate. She will get used to where to go if she is allowed to go there. That is also too long to go without water. I think you had better speak to a vet about taking care of a dog. You need it. She is also not getting enough exercise. What a sentence you have given her!
It takes a bit of training and patience at first. Believe me, if she gets the chance to go out; she will prefer that.
Answer by Little Chi GirlWhat breed is your puppy? Small breeds take much longer to get housebroken than large dogs and some puppies take longer than other for other reasons. I disagree with your vet. I put my puppies either in an x-pen or a large crate. The crate is large enough so the puppy has plenty of room to move around and has food and water. On the other end, I put down papers or wee wee pads. What your dog is learning is that it’s okay to be dirty – exactly what you don’t want her to learn. If you can get an x-pen (exercise pen), that will allow her more room and a special place to go potty, I think you will see a big improvement. It may still take awhile though before she is completely housebroken. Time, patience and TLC will win the day.Answer by Bonsylar
A 6 month old (no matter the breed) is more than able to hold it for 4 hours. Especially with a potty break before.
Consider nixing the crate. Some dogs don’t respond well, and the fact that she will pee in there is troublesome. If this becomes a habit, she may forget all her housetraining. Once this happens it’s almost impossible to house train them.
Instead, “puppy proof” a bathroom, laundry room, or your kitchen. There is no reason she needs to be in a crate, just confined so she doesn’t get into and destroy stuff.
Good luck
Answer by decbaby8303well make sure there is no water or food in the crate..make sure she goes potty before you leave for work..i wouldn’t leave anything in there with her until she is trained not to go in there..maybe see if there is someone that can come over and let her out..maybe 4 hours is too long for her..not sure why, she is old enough to hold it for longer..she could be doing it cuz shes mad..you might want to try, instead of a crate seeing if you have a small room in the house that you could make hers..the crate just might not be her thing..but try some different things, see what works..give it time.. or take her to the vet and see whats goning on..ask them if there is a reason why she does this..cuz i personally never had any problems with crate training my puppy and i got him at 8-9 weeks old..good luckAnswer by Bama
Perhaps a crate isn’t the best method.. I mean a small dog that is also a puppy… 4 hours???
And then 4 hours at a time… how many hours during the day total? Most likley WAY TO MUCH!!
Why not put puppy enclosed into the kitchen (or a room with washable floors) and put down Potty pads as well as bedding on the opposite end of the room … this will give the puppy a chance to have more room and will allow an opportunity to learn — bedding seperated from potty area.
Also, it gives her room to move and she is then better prepared for “the rest of the house”
To many times Crates are used for to many hours out of the day… leading to problems
Answer by christopher sTry to train the dog to do what you want it to do. I have a review for some dog training products that cover many of the problems for dog owners.Answer by salterini1
I had a similar issue with my puppy. You mentioned that you had a sheet in there with her. (I had a towel) Once I removed this she was better about peeing in there.

The best thing a dog owner can do is buy 3 books one
1) on vet med
2) on training
3) on the breed you have
This is your best help.
You will get a lot of wrong answers here-but some are good
