Ashleah: How do you determine the sex of a parakeet?
I have two parakeets. They are always kissing and playing and chirping at one another. I used to know that you could tell the sex by the color around their nostrils but I can’t remember what color is which sex. If anyone can help me I’d greatly appreciate it.
Oh and I’d greatly appreciate it if people would only answer if they know the question. I don’t find jokes and other things off subject as funny. Thanks.

Most young budgies have stripes, or a wavy pattern, across their forehead which they lose after the first molt (molting is the shedding and regrowth of feathers). You may not be able to determine the sex of your budgie until after the first molt; the cere is beige or light pink color in young budgies. After the first molt (4-6 months of age) a male’s cere will turn blue, and a female’s will stay beige/tan. Of course there are exceptions to the rule depending on the color mutation of your budgie. One way to tell a young male from a female is their way of communicating. A young male will sit and sing away in a very sweet voice. A female sounds more like she is lecturing the world on everything it is doing wrong. Males tend to be much more vocal than females too.Answer by keket321

I think blue is a male(color above beak). U can always wait until one of them lays an egg than it will be really easy to find out. And that’s cute that they love each other.Answer by Conure FeatherDragon
If you have very young budgies (aka Parakeets), it can be hard to tell what sex they are. In females over the age of 6 months, the area where their nostrils are turns a crusty brown. When it’s about time for them to lay eggs, it turns VERY brown and looks really flaky. Males’ nostril area will turn a bright blue, though in some colors it will be more purple.
In baby budgies the nose color is whitish with a pale purple tint to it. Sometimes you can tell if a bird will be male as the nostril area will turn blue at the sides, but that can be misleading. I’ve tried guessing the sex of my budgies at that age and I’ve almost always been wrong >.< . Baby budgies will have stripes down the front of their head that touches their nostrils. They moult those feathers at 6 months, when they start to look more like adults!
Hope that helps!
Answer by JonesyYour colourful friend’s sex you ask? If it’s a male, the spot on top of his beak is a bright blue. A female’s is a browny pink colour. You won’t be able to tell as soon as they’re born. Wait until they are a few weeks old.Answer by LIL_SASSY
DONT WORRY BOUT IT. AS LONG AS THEY KNOW THEY WILL BE ALRIGHT IT WONT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE IF YOU KNOW OR NOTAnswer by MAMMARAT
At about the age of 6 months, a parakeet reaches maturity. The male is a bright blue on the seer, the area immediately above the beak. The female at the same age has a seer the color of pinkish/light purple. When females are ready to mate the seer is brown and is not flaky. The seer being flaky is a type of mites. The majority of pet shops sell birds around the age of 8-12 weeks.
