The clitoris was the part that would be the source of pleasure for the woman. If the most sensitive part of a woman’s anatomy is on the outside, how can intercourse feel good? Also, I don’t understand how intercourse would stimulate the clitoris. From the diagrams of female anatomy, it seems to me that the clitoris is quite far from the vaginal entry. How can a penis entering the vagina have any affect on the clitoris?

The penis really doesn’t directly stimulate it. The pubic bone on the male stimulates the part of the clitoris that is at the apex of the labia. However, the clitoris is actually much larger than just the “little button” that everyone is familiar with. It extends down both sides of the labia internally in kind of a wishbone shape (from the diagrams I have seen). The area around the penis, as well as the scrotum and testicles can put pressure on these areas as well, stimulating the entire area.

But, in my personal experience, you are right – for women who prefer / need direct clitoral stimulation, the penis won’t usually do the trick while inside the vagina. That falls back to external penile-clitoral stimulation, manual-clitoral stimulation, or oral-clitoral stimulation. (Not counting the use of toys).
