Rachel: How do I keep my elbow from hurting after tennis?
I’m a beginner-intermediate tennis player who plays tennis for recreation. I use a racket which is pretty old and heavy towards the head. I haven’t restrung the racket in a while now, and the grip is worn out. I’m using mostly old balls. I only had a coach for a short period of time a few years back, so maybe my swing is wrong.

I got tennis elbow and tendonitis from using a heavy rackt..so if i were you..my first step would be to buy a lighter rackt..(if its just for fun it doesnt really need to cost $ 200 in my opinion) i would also suggest trying one of those arm band things that are suppose to help with tennis elbow (the ones you wear on your upper forearm) ..besides that i would just ice it after you play so the inflammation with go down. Good luck!
It is probably your stroke. Take lessons from a coach who knows a thing or two about elbow injuries. See, it is hard to diagnose online, because there are several different ailments that can occur to a tennis player’s elbow. However, an experienced coach will be able to tell you what you’re doing wrong and fix it.
Also, ice it always a good idea.
Answer by Cameron MacDonaldI recommend getting the ‘prince’ racket with holes in the head(can’t remember the name) because it is extremely light and good on follow through for spin. I also recommend getting a new coach to help with you’re swing. Don’t try to hard to crush the ball, take a light swing with inner power as opposed to brute force. Also if it still hurts, take a bath in epsom saltsAnswer by Jeff
Ya you are doing everything wrong that’s why. Get an even balanced racket, synthetic gut or nylon strings at the recommended tension, always use new grips and balls with some pressure, and get a coach. Now for the elbow, ice it every 2 hours until it gets better.Answer by eddie h
keep ice your elbow to begin with,
racket should not be the issue, but the String does,
try to get a new set of string and add vibrators on
your racket so there are not much as shocks during
your swings.
hope it helps 🙂 good luck

One of the most common causes for “tennis elbow” is squeezing onto the racket too hard. Hold the racket only hard enough so that on contact the racket is not moving in your hand. Relax your hand and your arm and elbow will relax too.
Using old balls is a bad thing for all kinds of reasons. 1) it causes you to swing harder to get the ball over the net..hence tennis elbow. 2) Once you use new ones, the ball will be bouncing higher (correctly) and you will not be used to it and be standing in the wrong place. Use new or fairly new balls.
Take a private or group lesson one time if you are just getting back into it. It would be worth it to get you starting out on the right foot.
Good luck!
