How do I find rightful owner of a lost parrot?

amamba11: How do I find rightful owner of a lost parrot?
I found a parrot on the street. How do I find the owner? The bird has a leg band with letters and numbers on it, can that be used for identification? It is a big green parrot.

Ask the police.

Check out the local pet shops. Talk to the owners and check for bulletin boards.

Read the newspaper lost and found section.

In addition to what Mark said, put a found ad in the paper. Most papers do that for free. But don’t give too much info. Just say “found bird, call to identify”. That way you will know you are getting it to the right owner and not someone just trying to get their hands on a free bird. The owner may know exactly what the band says and if so, that will be further proof. However, depending on whether the bird was easy to handle, they may only know it’s wearing a band but not exactly what it says. If you have a carrier, you can take it to a vet and have them scan it for a microchip. Good for you that you are trying to get it to it’s rightful owner. I’m proud of you.

maybe post an add in that area like people do when they have lost pets. Say you found a lost bird but dont be very descriptive and when people call about it have them describe it. the one who knows what it looks like is more then likely the owner. the bands on their legs do offer some information about them if you take it to a pet store or go to a pet store they might be able to direct as to where to go or how to find out what information is on it. it should have the date it was born and where the breeder is that it came from…good luck i hope that the bird is reunited with its owners

Answer by Harley Drive
they can be worth a lot of money so if you put an ad in a paper you will be inundated with scam calls , like the other guy says do not put any of the bird’s details out in public let any caller describe it exactly to you

Or go to yahoo group type in “911ParrotAlert” and register into the group. After registering, you can post the bird you found. FYI for everyone as well, this group has a posted a registered band owners/breeders. You can trace some of the bird that has a leg band.
