How can you force a laptop to connect to an external monitor?

Barry C: How can a laptop be forced to connect to an external monitor?
I have a laptop with a damaged screen. How can I force the laptop to connect to an external monitor without being able to navigate with a screen?

if you look on the sides or the back of the laptop
check if it has either a VGA output, HDMI output,S-video output, orDVI output
if they dont have any of those then you cant

connect the vga/dvi port of the laptop to an external monitor and use function keys to toggle the displays from laptop and external

Hold the Fn key and try using F4, F5 or F6
(while holding the Fn key down when you press the others)
