Do you see Buddhism as having the potential to unite mankind?

Jacky Chun: Do you see Buddhism as having the potential to unite mankind?
Buddhism is a philosophy that can be practiced in addition to practically any religion, as well as being practiced strictly on it’s own. Buddhism teaches the five precepts, the four noble truths, and the eightfold path, which have the potential to help ease suffering.

There are a great many things in the world that have that potential.

My aim is getting people to realise this.

Answer by Ash
No, thanks for invitation.

Answer by J
Except people enjoy their suffering. Nay the revel in it.

People don’t want to stop and take in the beauty of a rose, they just want to use it.

Answer by GbmM
I think each of the main religions has/had the potential to unite mankind. Followers have added so much to them, it’s debatable now.

Jesus is the only way. Seek him and you will find the truth.

Answer by Buddhist Objectivist
Yes, it’s a shame about those who are overcome with greed, ignorance and anger though.

Answer by Strategic Thinker
I am a Buddhist and the answer is no.

Buddhist teachings are very neutral and it needs a lot of medication, training in order to appreciate the profound teachings of Sakyamuni Buddha.

Buddhist does not believe in an omni-potent God with a gospel truth. Hence, to attain Nirvana is a result of one own actions and Karma. Hence, there is no short cut to Heaven in Buddhist context. It does not mean that you seek true refuge in the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha will ensure an seemless path to Heaven.

Because there is no shortcut and an Omni-potent God whereby a total submission will ensure a seemless passage to Heaven, not many people will accept this profound truth where our ALL powerful Sakyamuni Buddha had unveiled ( five precepts, the four noble truth and the noble eightfold paths etc).

For me, Buddha’s supreme powess is boundless and we need to save ourselves first before we can save other people from sufferings. This is the sacrifices of the many Bodhisattvas made to relieve suffering from mankind.

I quote the famous Bodhisattva’s profound compassion to relieve the world from suffering. ” If I do not go to Hell, who will”.

Answer by Alorer
Although Buddhism is a very intriguing and valid path, it is not one I can fully commit to or follow. I have many disagreements even in the little I know of it.
I seriously doubt that any religion or philosophy can unite everyone. Simply for the fact that we are all different, with our unique perception.

Answer by Prospero Reincarnate
Nope. I can see no single religion or philosophy uniting what is naturally diverse. Only acceptance of diversity can unite mankind. When the Romans took over Celtic lands, they adopted Epona as a powerful, primary Goddess, when they took over Egypt, they venerated Isis, when they conquered the middle east, Mithras. (and of course Rome fell after they adopted a singular one-God state religion under Constantine). . . The only way to unite a diverse group of people, is through diversity.

Answer by David
While the teachings of Buddhism make good sense, they will not achieve unity of mankind until there are no longer those that declare that their own narrow interpretations of a misunderstood collection of ancient texts are the only truth (you know who I mean)

Answer by GreatDoubt
No, in order to unite mankind, there needs something to be united against. Buddhism does see things as separate so there is nothing to unite against. In other words, the world is perfect as it is. That’s why true Buddhists do not actively go out and try to convert people or impose their views on others. Some people even see Buddhism as selfish because it is about controlling our self through our mind, and thus Buddhism does not promote “multilevel marketing” like schemes to help people. By helping our self first, we are then able to help others. If people were to ask for help from Buddhism, they are taught how to help themselves. Why? Because teaching a person to fish is better than giving him or her a fish. Unfortunately, most people would rather be given a fish. Religion and society are games of numbers (democracy is controlled by the majority) so unless Buddhism is able to gather as many followers as the other major religions, it would not be able to unite mankind. With that said however, every Buddhists should know not to have attachment to mankind so it is perfect that Buddhism does not unite mankind. We are all different for a reason.

Answer by Ryunyo
Not against their will.

Answer by goodfella
Ask yourself “Do YOU have the potential to unite mankind?”, for Buddhism is Oneself.

In whatever way, to whatever extent we are able, we should strive, daily, to unite mankind.

We should each be “Local Heroes”.

Best Wishes,

Goodfella

Only if everyone becomes a buddhist. But which kind of buddhist? Even buddhists are not united.

Buddhism is just another religion no matter how starry eyed and naive westerners get about it.
