Alpha Maisoon: Is having a criminal as a brother a bit cliche these days?
In a book I’m planning to write, the heroine’s boyfriend’s eldest brother is a criminal mastermind. Is that idea a bit repetitive these days?

Nothing’s cliche when it comes to crime…
Unless you’re saying the criminal mastermind’s outfit is a mask, black & white striped shirt, shaved head… Etc.O.O
There are a lot of criminals around these days as far as it goes it is quite common however – the only way you caould make it different was if you told us about the crime he commited. As you could make it a crime that is not a “cliched” crime if that makes sense.
Hope this helps
and Good luck on writing your book

More a bit unlikely. Unless you have a very old heroine, or there’s a big age difference in there somewhere. Masterminds in just about any line of business, legal or illegal, tend to be the older and more experienced people.Answer by Max Tyler
Rather!
And let me guess? The villain kidnaps the girl’s brother and the girl, in turn, has to go ‘rescue’ him only to get caught by the bad guy when they have their epic fight and the bad guy tells the girl his mastermind plans and it was all because he secretly liked her all along but she ignored him or spurned him and went for his younger brother. Thus, he developed an intense hatred for her because she made his life miserable and blah, blah, blah! Of course, she ends up saving the day really awesomely and defeats said evil villain and rescues her one true love and they live happily ever after.
Ring a bell? Well, sorry for that outburst but I couldn’t help it since every single novel these days happens to be about a strong-willed and determined young woman who has to rescue her boyfriend and save the day. Usually, she has magical powers or is really skilled in fighting weapons and automatically kicks everyone’s ass even though she’s never held a gun before and straight out of high shool. Okay, now I’m rambling so I better cut it short before I completely blow my top off.
One thing I will say though is revise, review, revise, and (once again) review. I’ve dabbled in story writing before and when I look back on some old stuff I feel like vomiting (still do with recent stuff). Anyhow, there’s hope for any story so long as you really put your heart into it and give it all you got. Ignore jerks like me but do glean the advice we give because it will help you in your story. Well, bye for now and I hope all goes well. It can be real fun to write so have a blast there.
Good Luck!
