Cell phones interfere with the aircraft’s radios and flight control systems.
To the person below who stated “There has never been any evidence to prove this” is dead wrong. I own an airplane and my cellphone does interfere with the radios if I forget to turn it off. Now, I am just one person, imagine 250 people in back of you all having their phones on at the same time? I would say I’d be dead worried making an instrument approach in bad weather.
We will eventually see a method of shielding this interference from the cockpit but the FAA is not in a hurry to approve these methods.
Answer by michelob86Because there is fear that the signal would interfere with the navigation equipment.Answer by BobbyR
the original reason was the theory that it would interfere with navigation equipment. There has never been any evidence for this.
Now it’s twofold – some people don’t know how to talk on cell phones and talk to loudly, annoying people around them, plus, the aitlines make big bucks on inflight calls from their phones.

The Federal Aviation Administration fears the wireless signals could interfere with an airplane’s avionics and communications equipment. The FCC also bans in-flight use because cell phones can communicate with more than one cell tower when in the air. This could lead to disruption of service for cell phones on the ground, which use only one tower at a time.Answer by labradortea
Your cell phone transmission signal competes with the communication system of the plane you are on during take-off & landing to the ground air controllers.Answer by phlflyers1
Good question. I work for Delta Airlines and have often wondered this as well. I have heard from pilots (like the one that stated here), that indeed it does interfere with the navigation on the aircraft. I have also read that they do not have any evidence that this has happened.
My question has always been that…if cell phones do interfere with the navigation, is it possible that the cell phone usage messed with United flight 93 navigation when the plane went down. I know the terrorists made the flight ultimately go down, but, how much did the cell phones mess with navigation?
