I don’t know when but humans are affectionate creatures. So i am guessing that’s why they pet dogs..
It didn’t start out with dogs, it started out with domesticated wolves. Both humans and canines love physical contact, petting probably started as soon as the domestication of the wolf did.Answer by tough_guy_1977

Dogs always give unconditional love to their owners. Because of that, humans will respond. Basically, we are loving creatures and will respond more rapidly when there are no conditions attached.Answer by AnnE2
Cats were first. Egyptians worshipped them.Answer by greekman
No idea, but, what amazes me to this day is the fact that people have no problem with their dogs being petted by a total stranger and I think that is one of the biggest reasons why dogs sometimes get confused and try to bite them.
No dog wants or needs to be touched by anyone outside of his immediate pack..it is not something that is done on the dog world and yet, we, as humans insist upon doing to dogs and forcing them in a position they do not want to be in.
If more people looked at this petting issue from a dog’s point of view, I think we would have less problems with biting and aggression towards humans. Hope I helped!!
ADD: Oops, I forgot, I need to apoligize, I forgot who I was talking to here…ignorance does not change facts people, it just keeps perpetuating itself and you don’t learn anything this way!!!

I sure don’t know the origination but I know the effect. I have visited with patients who were near death….and the feel of fur enrapturing their fingers envelopes them in a sense of peace, reduced anxiety, a deep calm. ….. Heartwarming.
I hafe seen troubled children seemingly beyond the reach of professional help, open up, relax, cuddle, hold and open up to a dog….where no human had succeeded with them.
I have seen alzheimers patients glow with delight as a small creature gazes into their eyes while receiving their gentle though unstable touch.
I have seen folks who couldn’t recall the name of their visitors talk with delight about a dog they used to have.
Dogs make us whole. Provide comfort, unconditional companionship, relieve stress, relieve depression, protect us, work with us, work for us. Their our best friend, free of judgement, free of prejudice, free to love us.
We learn so much from this amazing species.
