Aisle C: When is the best date to stop saying “Happy New Year” to friends and other people?
I continue to say it to friends that I have not seen or seen recently, phone conversation and general street people. I was thinking 12 to 14 days after New Year’s but that just me. I am curious !!!

I think after mid-January people should stop saying it.
I usually stop 2 or 3 days after New Years, but I guess it wouldn’t be unreasonable to say it for the entire month!Answer by ms_upsidedown
Your timetable sounds about perfect. I’m still saying it to people now if I haven’t seen them in the past couple weeks. A few more days and then I’m just going to go back to “How are you?” etc.Answer by Neville

Usually you wish Happy New Year to relatives and friends on New Years Day either by phone call or email (and some people also do that in their Christmas card). Then when you return to work the day after New Years you simply turn your calendar on your desk and it’s already 2008 so you can stop saying any more greetings.Answer by Rena S

About a week for me.Answer by AngelEyes
I think 12-14 days after the New Year’s is just fine. As for me I would probably wish them until the first week of Jan. You can stop wishing people if you like and if they do, just reciprocate. And maybe I should say……..Happy New year and hope the year ahead brings luck, good health and happiness. Cheers!!Answer by Allyson

After you’ve said it once. I saw a friend for the first time in June once and said it.Answer by sweetea
I think that your suggestion on time sounds good! I figured that after a week, I would stop adding it to emails (and Answers), unless it’s a friend with whom I have not spoken to since the new year began. But I stopped saying it on the phone at work by last Friday. Even though I might not be the first to say it, I would return the sentiment if someone said it well into the year…
Therefore, Happy New Year!
Answer by EllaI stop on January 2. Someone wished me a happy new year yesterday, and it stopped me short because I didn’t know what she was talking about at first. I just can’t keep a holiday going that long.
(By the way, may I take this time to wish you a Happy and Healthy New Year!)
