Teng: When is a house considered a mansion?
I have always wondered what the real defination of a mansion is. I know it means a really big house but I just notice new large homes being developed around my community and some are getting larger and larger. Would a 6,200 sqft house be considered a mansion? I mean how many sqft do you need in order to determine that your house is a mansion?
I’d like to know exactly what a mansion is by size of sq footage. Thank you for the defination but I see large homes in my community that would make any priest feel comfortable to live in but I just want to know if my house could be considered a mansion? Everyone who comes to my house say ” its a mansion”! I think its not a mansion but a large house, but how can you determine if its a mansion or not? Thank you for answering….I am just curious

A mansion is defined simply as a large dwelling or house.
The word itself derives (through Old French) from the Latin word mansus the perfect passive participle of manere “to remain” or “to stay”.
The English word “manse” originally defined a property large enough for the parish priest to maintain himself, but a mansion is no longer self-sustaining in this way (compare a Roman or medieval villa). ‘Manor’ comes from the same root— territorial holdings granted to a lord who would remain there— hence it can be seen how the word ‘Mansion’ came to have its meaning.

I would have a hard time calling anything a mansion that doesn’t sit on at least a few acres and have a dominating presence.
Houses in the 4000 sq. ft. range (and generally don’t have much land) is what has been being called “McMansions”. As the middle class has more disposable income that they choose to put into larger, and larger houses I think what it takes to be a mansion will continue to increase.
