alexbr91: whats a good credit card for a 18 yr old?
i just turned 18 recently and i want to start building up my credit asap because it sucks when you want to get a cell phone contract or something that requires a credit check but then you get denied because of “insufficient credit history” so i want to open a credit card that i plan to use very lightly just for minor stuff because i dont want to go in debt but i still want to build my credit so does anyone know of any good ones?
so im getting a lot of “dont get one” answers, so not being dumb and stubborn imma listen to you guys because you probably more experienced than me. BUt is there any other way to build up my credit i already have a checkings and savings account.

get a secured credit card from your bank
Try a gas credit card like Chevron. That will help build. Also an account at Fingerhut is helpful when you are starting out.Answer by Guess Who?
None, use a debit card or cash. Those who use credit cards spend 12% more than those who use cash. And nobody NEEDS a credit card. Any time you cannot use cash you can use a debit card.
ADD: Companies cannot not do business with you because you don’t have a credit card.

Answer by JustinDo to the bank and just get a basic credit card. You should make sure you also have a debit/checking card with a few hundred dollars. But never buy anything unless you have the money to pay it off right away.
I am not sure you need to build credit you should already have good credit being 18. But never hold debt on your card.

Wal Mart will probably give you one. Use it every month, but don’t carry a balance. Just pay it off every month. That should start you with a credit report.Answer by Sunburn
Well if you actually live in Canada, I’d say TD Canada, BMO, uh…ScotiaBank, RBC, CIBC, etc.Answer by seacap2000
Any credit card is good for establishing credit. The main thing to be aware of is that you need to always make your payments on time and DON’T RUN THEM UP TO THEIR LIMIT! Use your card but make it a habit to always pay them off at least every two months.Answer by Jimbo D
You do know how credit cards help your credit score right? lmao. That is the worst way to build credit. A lot of people get a credit card and either
a.) pay it off in full every month which does not hurt or help their credit score or
b.) end up paying the min balance (usually just interest) and gaining just a few points on their credit score. This is the problem with America. If you want, go ahead. Rack up $ 1500 on your credit card. Every month you will be asked to pay about $ 150 for the min. balance. You pay that and next month you will owe $ 1505 because $ 155 was interest. So the following month you pay $ 160. Now you owe $ 1499. Play that game for a year, and you will have given the credit card company $ 1800 in interest, still have an outstanding debt of ~$ 1400, and have only gained about 3 points on your FICO score.
There are better ways to build credit. I suggest you research them
Answer by cvw220you don’t need a credit right now. you’ll regret it. DEBIT is the best way to go. It’s like a credit card but it’s your money. So you don’t owe anyone anything and no interest due.Answer by StephenWeinstein
1. If you were denied a cell phone because of “insufficient credit history”, then you will also be denied all credit cards, except for secured credit cards, for the same reason. Therefore, the only type of credit card that you can get right now is a secured credit card.
2. You do not have to use a credit card to build your credit history. You just have to have a credit card. Keeping the account open is sufficient to build your credit history; actually using the card is not necessary.Answer by Truth
