I spent 6 years working in software engineering for a company, before my chance to transfer to the Japan office. I suggest to look for career opportunities with a company that does business on a global scale. For example, Nike sells shoes all over the world. In contrast, there are many very large companies that do business within the USA but they do not have over seas offices and growth to transfer there.
Through my kid’s schools I met the other expats and corporate transferees in Tokyo. The majority of these guys were all mid and high level managers in the financial and investments sectors. There were few of us engineering types, and most of the IT guys were IT and systems senior directors. Which meant they were all policy and management. Most people had MBAs and 10+ years of career experience. Most of them could not speak Japanese, but their position as a very knowledgable person in that key sector was most important.
In your case, you should look at studying something in the investments and banking sectors. Another area would be in marketing and economics. In any case, you need experience in the industry. Work your way up the ladder, be a leader and a pro active person. It is rare to spend the money and transfer raw talent from once country to another. In my office now, we look for people who have the experience and that can add to the bottom profit line now.
