wolven: What type of dance should I learn for CATS?
I’m auditioning for CATS at my local theatre in a couple months and I really want to be in it. I am planning on starting dance lessons next week, but I’m unsure of what type of dance to learn. I was thinking it was more jazz or ballet, but I’m not sure. So, what type of dance should I learn to audition for CATS?

tumbling and jazz. Really tumbling.
Both jazz and ballet, please don’t take this the wrong way but a couple of months of classes might not be enough to turn you into the dancer they are looking for. I don’t want to say this to discourage you, since I want you to try and do your best, I’m saying to help you stay grounded and realize that you just might not may it. Do you have a song prepared that you are working on? Even as a member of the chorus (the background cast) you will have to be able to sing too. I do wish you the best of luck.Answer by Audrey
I recommend learning jazz, ballet, tap, and possibly tumbling. All three will come in handy because the choreography is so different, beautifully unusual, and very difficult (but that also depends on the production your in). Before auditioning for CATS I took ballet for a few months, and take my word for it, it helped! I personally found ballet to be the most helpful (but please note that I already had a background in jazz), but jazz is also very important, because a lot of the choreography is a mix of the two. I also recommend you take tap because Jennyanydots song “The Old Gumbie Cat” is a tap number. Also, if you want a part such as Mungojerrie or Rumpleteazer I also highly recommend tumbling. I also want to warn you that the choreography, even at your local theather, may be extreamly difficult. A couple months of dance may not be enough if you are just starting dance with no prior experience, but don’t get discouraged! Best of luck to you and good luck on your audition!
