Poppy-May: What should I major in?
I seriously want to know what I should choose to do in college so I can set myself up for a better chance in the “real world.” I know I’m really good at English and Language and Lit, and I’m a good essay writer, and I’ve done a lot of creative writing (won some awards/cash here and there), but there’s no market for that unless you wrote Harry Potter. I thought about teaching it too, and it seems relatively safe, but my teachers always tell me “As long as you like it and marry well you’ll be alright,” but I want to know that I could pull my own weight with my salary. I act a lot, and I love to help direct. (As lead role and as a senior I get to boss people around a lot.) I like movies and I’ve written plays (a few awards there, too.) I know there’s money in advertising, and I’m pretty ok with media and tech. I don’t want anything in the medical field.
I guess my question is, if I had to choose my major tomorrow, what should I choose? My main concerns are money, and stability of work. What’s big right now, and what will still be big twenty, thirty, forty years from now? I don’t really care to pursue my passions or anything like that, I just want a good job.
Any suggestions from any well-informed, experienced people?
I am a female high-school senior and I am bi-lingual. I speak fluent English and Russian.

Biology and Biochemistry will never die off. People are always in need of medical care. My major is Biochemistry and they are both basically the same except Biochemistry has a little less Biology and a little more Chemistry. Good luck. 🙂
im not very ‘experienced’ but for the longest time my mom wanted me to be a pharmacist, cuz they make a shitload of money and only have to work like 5 hours a day. you still have to go through med school, but its easier than being a doctor.Answer by :]
There’s a lot of money in translating for private companies. Obviously there are some huge Russian companies out there that could use you, so Russian Language & English Language would be a good double-major combo.
You could do advertising. You’d have to learn more about what makes people tick, though… You could go into graphic design, and once you’ve established yourself you can do so well with that, again because you’re bilingual (you can help build sites of English AND Russian companies!).
Translating will not go away. Advertising and graphic design are here to stay for our lifetimes. Those are safe choices, but at the end of the day you have to do what you love. The people that stick to the one thing that they love the most, even through the hard times, are usually the ones who end up making a lot of money after a few years of hard work. I assume it’s because they actually care about what they’re doing, so they look for more innovative ways to improve their field. When they improve their field, they improve their salaries! So really these are just suggestions, but you should follow your heart :]
Oh and if you’re seriously considering teaching because you genuinely want to teach but are worried because of the money… think about this: Wouldn’t it be great if you became a millionaire even if you end up doing something you hate? But wouldn’t it be even better if you can help two people realize and reach their dreams so they can live happy and fulfilling lives, even if they don’t become millionaires?
