iBePWNIN ♥AdoraBull♥: What puppy food would you reccomend for a Giant sized dog?
I want a good dry food. Not sure which is the best for a giant breed puppy, though.
Thanks in advance. =]
I don’t mind how much it costs. I’ll buy the most expensive stuff if I need to.
I know giant breeds eat ALOT.
I live in the UK, so it would be good to get a food I can buy in my local pet stores.
Vet Tech, is that because of how much protein is in puppy food?
What would you reccomend then?

Iams are great for dry food they have lots of vitamins 🙂
Pedigree is really good. (:Answer by Rick
Depends on what you want to spend for dog food. The large breeds will eat more than 50 lbs/month so you need to consider that. Buy the best dog food that you can afford & not the cheap stuff.Answer by dali333
canidae ALSAnswer by Purple is so awesome
Authority is really healthy…..don’t listen to the people that say Iams and pedigree is good b-cuz it is not!!!Answer by Vet Tech
Honestly? NONE.
Giant breeds should NOT eat puppy food! At all! They should be on an all life stages food or raw fed (if feasible). I recommend Canidae for people who cannot feed raw or one reason or another.
ADD: Crash… Giant breeds should NEVER eat large breed formulas! Ever! They are GIANT breeds, not large breeds! They have very different dietary needs!
ADD2: Bingo! It causes them to grow much to quickly which can lead to joint issues as they mature. I always recommend Canidae. It is also advised to start your Giant breed on Glucosamine at around 6 months of age as a preventive!
Answer by CrashBe sure to get a food that has glucosamine and chondroitin in the ingredients list, or beef cartilage. This supports healthy joints and is a must for large breed dogs. Most dog foods have a large breed puppy line so it’s a good idea to go with that. Look for a food that has no corn, soy, by-products, or unspecified meat sources like meat meal, poultry by-product etc. You have no idea what kind of animal is in the food, not good. This stuff is very cheap to manufacture into dog food and is not very nutritional.
In short, most food you buy at the supermarket is garbage. Anything that doesn’t list a specified meat ingredient FIRST and preferably more than once has very little meat content for a carnivore. Here’s some good foods you could check out:
Innova (they have a large breed food and it’s top of the line)
Canidae.
Wellness
California Natural
Acana (cheaper than some but still good food. 50% chicken.)
Natural Balance
There’s lots. Ask your pet food supplier for help, they’re usually very knowledgable. Also check out dogfoodanalysis.com
Answer by RVCanidae. It is made with the most nutritional and natural ingredients. It was also one of the few brands that was not affected by the pet food recall.Answer by trooper (canine bad citizen)
Giant Breed puppies should be fed a high quality adult dog food with 23% or less protein and fat level (below 14% at most) , a raw diet, or a properly home cooked diet. With the exception of Eagle Pack, I don’t believe that any of the other puppy foods are appropriate.
Feeding foods higher in fat and protein can result in extremely painful and potentially fatal conditions such as pano and HOD. I have seen giant breeds suffer from the conditions, and it is absolutely heartbreaking to see a puppy unable to move and screaming in pain. Eagle Pack is a private company based in Mishawake, Indiana. Eagle Pack is the first and only dog food to do extensive research on giant breed dogs with bone growth problems. They formulated a food specifically for these giants to eliminate diseases such as pano, ocd, and hod. If you can not get it where you are then check out the ingredients, and find a food in the UK that is similar. However you can order Eagle pack online easily.
ADD: I just thought you may find this of interest. Some research done in Sweden in the 1970’s and touted today, suggests that protein levels are immaterial and that calcium levels are key with a calcium level of 0.8% as “optimum”. The test diet was a custom formula totally unlike any brand on the market then or now. Ingredients were: bloodmeal, casein, soybean flour, corn gluten meal, corn/potato starch mixture, tallow, soybean oil, sugar, cellulose, and vitamins and minerals. Twenty five percent of the dogs fed the “optimum” calcium diet limped during the gaiting exam. Other research states that calcium levels of 0.7 and 0.6% cause stress fractures.

No puppy food for an extra large breed like that. Here is a site that will show you which dog foods are the best and the worst. I suggest that you get any one of the dog foods that are top rated.

Most of grocery store dog food formulas, like IAMS, Pedigree, Science Diet, Purina, and etc contain “meat and bone meal” which has been known to contain dead dogs and cats that were euthanized in animal shelters. Their bodies are picked up and bought by the truck load by “rendering plants” , that also pick up road kill, dead live stock, and etc. They are shredded, and boiled. They skim off the fat on the top of the “soup” and collected it and sell it to pet food companies as “animal fat”, the rest of the animals’ remains are crushed up, dried and sold to dog and cat food companies as meat and bone meal.
You can read more about it here.
Here is an article where the owner of a rendering plant talks about it. He says that cremating the dead shelter animals would cause pollution, and that rendering them is good.
Here is further information on what you shouldn’t see in the ingredients list in your dog’s food.
