Do you mean a parrot cichlid or the saltwater parrot fish?
I assume you mean the cichlid. My parrot cichlid likes to pick up gravel in it’s mouth and move it around. I would say get a fine gravel so that the fish are able to do that. If you get pebbles or bigger gravel, it may get stuck in the fish’s mouth.
It took 2-21/2 bags of gravel to fill up my 55 gallon fish tank.
Answer by Schiffy!Sand can also work. With my friend’s cichlid tank, the parrotfish just eat a bit of substrate and burp it out again. Just find some aquarium sand. As long as it doesn’t affect the water chemistry, it’s good.
