Beyond Bleach: Is it compulsory to have a puppy vaccinated or is it just reccommended?
I’m planning to get a puppy soon and it’s my first time.
I’m still a little new to this and wasn’t sure if puppies have to get vaccinated or is it just recommended.
Also what kind of vaccines a puppy needs. And how much will it cost?
If puppies are purchased in pet stores are they already vaccinated and microchipped?

up to you and if you want to keep healthy
no they don’t
Here is the latest protocol for vaccinations;Answer by Bridgeridoo
It isn’t compulsory but I would strongly recommend you do get it vaccinated. It will save you money and hassle in the long run as your puppy won’t get common illnesses such as Parvo (virus that attacks the lining of the digestive system)
A pet shop puppy may not be the most healthiest and often come from puppy mills, you’d be better getting one from an independent breeder-look in your local paper or online.Buying from an independant breeder also ensures that the puppy will have had some vaccines. Micro chipping is usually something you get done yourself though.
To find out how much vaccines are you should visit your vet and ask them or have a look online, these websites might help you:

Answer by gizzer777It is compulsory for Rabies shots where I live (USA) and highly recommended for 5 in one vaccinations to avoid things like parvo and other disease. I also recommend Bordetella to prevent kennel cough, especially if the pup is socialized (as it should be) with other animals and humans.
In addition a license is required ($ 8 USD per year). If you get caught without a license, even if the dog does not leave your yard…$ 500 dollar fine will result…No warnings!
Choose a Vet and follow his/her advise so you do not vaccinate too early or late!
Good luck and I do recommend that you do a bit of research and ask lots of questions before you get a pup…OR ADOPT ONE!
If you want to take the puppy out of your house/yard or have people visit, you need to get it’s shots.
Every vet has different prices. My vet charges $ 125 for 3 vet visits and shots, $ 100 for 2.
If you want a fully vetted puppy get one from a shelter. Pet store puppies come from puppy mills… Google it.
Answer by MelPuppies need multiple sets of vaccinations…and it can be somewhat expensive
Have you considered adopting a dog from a local shelter? An older dog will already have all of their shots (will still need to get rabies boosters).
Answer by Ankita VarmaI don’t know which country you live in and the law there, but its usually not compulsary.
It is strongly recommended that you vaccinate your dog.
There are 2 common vaccinations that people vaccinate their dogs with- the first being the rabies vaccination. the reason why people are so careful with this is that rabies is an infectious disease, so if unfortunately the dog gets it, not only will it die but the owners and anybody near it will get bitten and infected too. Which usually results in death.
The other vaccination is for a combination of about 5 diseases. You should ask your vet about the care you should give your dog. Its essential for your dogs health and wellbeing.
If you do not vaccinate your dog, the chances of him suffering from disease are increased. As a responsible owner you should look to minimise the chances. Also you will not need to worry about the dog so much if he goes near other dogs etc if he’s vaccinated.
You should DEFINITELY ask the pet store owner about the vaccination your dog’s already had and if he has, the certificates to prove that. Because if your dogs already been vaccinated it would probably be harmful to repeat that vaccine.
Inform the vet of all the vaccines the dogs already had, as well as the dogs background.
Best of luck
Answer by MyraI’m just wondering why you would want a pup and then not want to get the shots to keep him from picking up several diseases that could very well kill it after going thru a lot of pain and suffering from such diseases? In our state it is a law to have the vaccine for rabies and even if it wasn’t I would have it done. Since you are a little new to being a dog owner you need to do a lot of research on the subject. There is a whole lot more to being a responsible owner than just buying one to have one.Answer by Conor B
Its optional but I feel compulsory. I’m not a vet or anything trying to boost my business, but I am a dog owner and small pups can become very ill quite quickly without vaccination.
Also if you got bitten by your pup while your playing, you could get very ill from the pup. So its just best if you vaccinate the pup!
Now I suppose you will just have to ask the pet store worker if the pup is chipped or vaccinated but by law you should be shown and given a document showing vet check ups etc.
Best of Luck!
Answer by CheyannFirst of all don’t get a pet shop puppy. They come from mills and will not be healthy. You can adopt a dog from a shelter that has already had its shots and is healthy.
With vaccinations you should do research. Everyone has their own opinion. I personally think they need to get their puppy shots and then after that only get vaccinated for things that are common in the area you live in and they should get minimal vaccinations (like they shouldn’t get yearly vaccinations). Some people never vaccinate, some people do yearly. Again, do research.Answer by MamaBas
As far as I’m aware, only rabies is compulsory, and even then I don’t think all US States require this? Check locally. However, of course it’s ‘recommended’ for a puppy to be fully vaccinated, which can be done any time from 8 weeks of age. These days, with most puppies/dogs having received their vaccination shots, picking up one of the fatal dog diseases is less likely, but Parvovirus is still rife, and if your puppy doesn’t have any shots, he could very well go down this this often fatal virus. Depending on the age of the puppy bought from a Pet Shop, it probably will come with it’s shots BUT DO NOT BUY FROM A PET SHOP!!! These puppies come from Puppy Mills or BYBs and although apparently ‘healthy’ often come with loads of problems. In any case, vaccination costs will undoubtedly be passed on to the buyer, if done before purchase.
Microchipping I think, is unlikely to have been done by the owners of a Pet Shop, but I really don’t know. Again, the cost will be passed on.
As for cost – vets do vary so phone round but don’t shop by price. You should always find a vet you can work with for the health of your puppy above all else.
Answer by Alyssa CoxWell first off let me say this,NEVER get a puppy from a pet store. They come from backyard breeders/puppy mills. These puppies are poor quality most of the time. You can’t see the parents and where they are living or their conditions and you can’t see the place where the pups were raised, and these are the pups that tend to have several health problems down the road. They also give APRI a bad name which is who i use and all my pups are from AKC Champion backgrounds
You have to have a dog registered with AKC before you can even get them registered with APRI and they do a search on the parents of your dogs names to verify that they are purebred they search AKC’s pedigree database and alot of puppy mills will falsify this stuff to make themself look good
And as far as shots, unless you never want to take him/her to show off then no, but if you plan on taking your puppy with you then yes he or she needs shots. Unless you want a very sick puppy later on. Parvo is a HIGHLY contagious disease and can be deadly thus they need to be vaccinated against this. As far as being current on shots from a pet store, I doubt it. The breeder could have gave a false record also some pet stores have been known to falsify records.
Look for a local reputable breeder. Try www.puppyfind.com and someone who offers a health guarantee with their pups.
Answer by LauraIt’s just a recommendation, but it will protect your pup against numerous diseases and viruses. Also, if you want to kennel your dog or join a dog training group you will need a current vaccination certificate.
The vaccinations depend on your country, but in Australia it costs about $ 85 (also depends on the Vet) usually this also includes a check-up.
Some pet stores include vaccinations, but most do not. They very very rarely include microchipping.
If you are looking for a puppy, you should really avoid pet stores as most of the dogs there come from Puppy Mills(not nice).
You can find private sellers on classifieds sites, or search for a reputable breeder. A great thing to do is adopt from a rescue shelter(yes, they DO have puppies) because you know that you are saving the dog from a bad home or from being put down. Also, most rescue shelter(I know the RSPCA does) sell the animal already microchipped, vaccinated, wormed and desexed – so it is actually cheaper this way, too.
Our local vet also has dogs and cats available for adoption, including microchipping, etc. for a good price.
You should really look around 🙂 It will save you a lot of money
Answer by ragapplerabies is compulsory – the rest highly recommended (the diseases are real and often fatal, sit on this list and you see bunches of folk loosing dogs to them l)- series of 3 vaccines 8 weeks 12 weeks & 16 weeks or 6 weeks 10 weeks & 14 weeks
pet store pups come from puppy mills and ar rarely micorchipped and frequently not vaccinated and in fact are the HIGHEST risk pups you can get for already having been exposed to and incubating the serious often fatal diseases the vaccines stop they are poorly bred and rarely well socialized -its putting money on a long shot gambleAnswer by Anita
Puppies need vaccinations at 8,12, and 16 weeks. de wormed at 4, 6, and 8 weeks. Put on heart worm prevention before 6 months old. Parvo lives in the ground for a long time, and can be brought into your home on peoples shoes. Parvo will kill your puppy within 24 hours. I don’t recommend getting a puppy until it’s 12 weeks old, and has had 2 sets of vaccinations. Worms can also kill. I rescued an 11 week old English pointer, that had hook worms, and needed a blood transfusion. Puppies are not protected from Parvo, until 72 hours after the 2nd vaccination.
Depends on where you live, to as how much the vaccinations will cost. The cost for vaccines, is cheaper than paying for treatment once the dog gets sick.
Never buy a puppy from a pet store! They come from puppy mills, and the owner will tell you they have been vaccinated, and weren’t. Therefore, you get a sick puppy, due to people handling them, and whatever they bring into the store.
Get a puppy from a rescue group. I rescue and foster for a local group. The fee you pay for the pup, pays for the vaccinations, heart worm testing, spaying/neutering, and de wormings. You will also be saving a life!
Answer by ravenRabies is compulsory where I live. The rest are optional.
At 10 weeks, the puppy looses immunities received through nursing (mother’s milk) which is why the vaccination is recommended.
Parvo is a killer, and Distemper is a puppy illness – so these two are really crucial. The rest I guess are debatable and depend on where you live and what you do with the dog.
I don’t know what pet stores do – I would avoid them. The dogs are over-priced and of questionable background. You would be better off getting a dog from a shelter or try to find one on petfinder.com
Answer by ?Don’t do it! Vaccinations will completely destroy it’s immune system.
Quote from Irene de Villiers:
Most individuals who had a lot of vaccines, have no thymus to speak
of, so no Th-1 activity to speak of, and a HUGE overenthusiastic army
of antibodies (causing everything from allergies to diabetes,
arthritis, cancer, and everything else we have seen emerge in big
numbers since vaccines were invented to destroy the Thymus with the
Th-1 system.) Most individuals have had their first line of defense
destroyed, and for some things (cancer for example and FIP) there is
no second line.
First of all, all puppies at pet stores come from puppy mills or local backyard breeders. All puppies need to have shots to protect them from disease. They get three rounds of DHLPPC and a rabies shot (required by law) then they need yearly shots after that. A good breeder will send them home with the first set and a microchip. The rest is up to you. Call the vet you plan to use and ask about pricing. My first puppy exam is usually about $ 100 and the second is usually about $ 50.
