The hospital should have gave you a form to mail into the dept of vital statics in your state to get a certified copy of the birth certificate. You will also have to send in a check or money order (usually about $ 12.00). You might also be able to get a copy though your local health dept.
The mothers copy is often just a nice piece of paper to take home that you can look at. It has all the info but its not a legal copy a birth certificate. A certified birth certificate is a legal document and is legal evidence that the birth took place. Keep the mother’s copy and apply for a certified birth certificate. In New Zealand you go to Birth Deaths and Marriages Office. But where ever in the world you are from there will be some thing similar to it.Answer by Doodlestuff
A mother’s copy is usually something that is decorative and intended to frame or scrapbook. A certified birth certificate has a seal on it. If it’s been more than 6 weeks, contact Vital Statistics and ask when your birth certificate is supposed to arrive. All parents are normally sent one free certified birth certificate in 6-8 weeks. Many get them in 3.
