simbaxcat: How would your parents handle a 13 year old dating a 16 year old and having sex?
My brother did just that. He and his wife said that they rather know where the daugher is (and not sneaking out of the house). The mom brought her to the gyn to get birth control.

Fast forward 4 years, she is still seeing this guy who is in college. She is an Honor’s student and is going to an Ivy League College in the Fall.

How would you as a parent deal with this or how would your parents deal with it?

“MY” parents wouldn’t handle “A” kid. They’d handle THEIR kid. So if that was the question (How would your parent handle their kid), then I could answer.

my parents would have freaked out but i would have done the same thing your brother and his wife did. you can’t stop them from doing what they want, you can just do your best to keep them safe and informed

I as a parent would never let my daughter do that. The maturity (or immaturity) level between 13 and 16 is huge, especially in different sexes. I would just have to break her little heart and give her a flat out no, no matter what her grades were. Even smart girls do very stupid things.

Uhm.. you should be focusing on your future. Its so interesting to me how younger people are concerned with their relationships. Get your life straight, relationships are only going to be distractions. If she gets pregnant, its over.. your lives will be changed forever. That is much too young to be making such big decisions. Youre talking about another persons life in this context, a baby. A person. A 16 year old with a baby is like letting a 16 year old drive drunk.

Thats confusing, but I’m pretty sure my parents would forbid ever seeing that guy again, and adding a lot other words imbetween. not to mention taking away computer, phone and cell phone for like 3 months, and keeping a very close eye on the kid for a very long time.

This scenario rarely happens, and I would not want my daughter to do that. She would not be dating a 16 year old in the first place. Trusting a 13 year old to use birth control safely is a gamble. Many adults become pregnant using it, and this child’s life would be forever changed if she did become pregnant.

A 19 year old having sex with a 16 year old could amount to statutory rape in many states. Lets say they break she could turn him in and he could be labeled a “sex offender” the rest of his life. Not worth it!

I’m a 32 year old high school counselor, and in today’s society- your brother is making a good choice. Kids can find drugs and places to have sex with who and whatever they want- and there’s only so much you can do to stop them without cutting off all contact to the rest of the world. The best thing you can do is to guide them towards the safer way to do these things; such as making sure the child has birth control/condoms, or telling them that it’s better to try drugs with people who they know and trust.

I know my mother and father would go mad at first, but i think my mum would soften up after a while if i explained how much i liked this lad.

And i suppose it really depends on the circumstances, how long they were together before they slept together etc, and how emotionally mature they both are.

I know i’d be the same as your brother if I were a parent.. or so i think I would.

I think that those two people handled the situation very maturely. They didn’t forbid her to do anything, which would probably drive her deeper into secrecy. Also, helping her get birth control was, I think, a smart idea. At least this way you know that if they’re having sex they’ve got protection.
If she’s still seeing this guy, they must have a committed relationship going on! And really, three years isn’t a huge gap in age. My parents are three years apart in their ages!

I would probably do something similar with my child: I’d meet the guy/girl, help with birth control, try to discourage sex in a relationship that’s not VERY committed, and make sure that my kid told me when s/he was going out to see his/her boyfriend/girlfriend.

Honestly, I think as me being a parent of 2 little girls that I would sit down and talk to both of them. I would like to know why would the 16 year old be interested in a 13 year old and vice versa. You can’t just disagree without hearing both sides. Have a open relationship with them so that if they have any questions they know that it is ok to talk to you. Finally, run to get her birth control.

My parents would ground me until I was forty and beat the snot out of the boy. No, really. They would have.

My daughter would not be ‘seeing’ anyone when she was thirteen. Too young for dating. She definitely wouldn’t be seeing a sixteen year old boy. She’d stay in my house, and I’d have words with the boy. If they continued to sneak around, I’d go to his parents. If THAT didn’t work, I’d go to the cops and check out statutory rape laws in my state.

she’s going to have serious problems when she’s older… especially when she finds out she preggo at 15… how are her parents going to feel about THT???

Wow, this is one of those moral dilemma’s that every parent probably dreads.

If the 13 year old was going to have sex with the older boy, she would find a way. She wouldn’t tell her parents about him and just sneak around.
She would not be able to get birth control (other then condems).

I would have a discussion with the 13 year old and maybe even the boy. Why can’t a 16 year old boy find a girl his own age?

It’s sort of setting up an environment where the child calls the shots.

I have mixed feelings.
If I was 13 and in love with an older boy–I would never tell my parents. I would sneak out of the house.

If I had a 13yr.-old daughter who was dating a 16yr.-old AND, I found out they were having sex:

1. I would end their relationship. If she refused-

2. I would go after him through the courts since, he would probably be the ‘Age of Consent’ but, she isn’t. That would be Statutory Rape on his part.

If i had a 13yr old daughter….i would not let her date a guy older than 14, until she was 14, when she wouldn’t be dating anyone older than 17. 13yrs old is too young to be dating anyone more than a year older. Because that older person has more experience than the 13yr old….and having sex…i’d murder her….and him. but anway i’d still love her of course….love amelia

If i was a parent i would surely be pissed but i cant . Cause then i would be seriously a hypocrit . I have done this before & a matter of fact im doinq this now . My parents trust me on who i date & age is just a number but 5 years a part yeahh, not a number anymore . But i do understand if she was my daughter i would have to trust her with all my miqht even thouqh iht hurts but i have to . That sex part will drive me insane but i’ll trust my daughter dhat she knows what she is doinq & wont have a baby .

If iht was my son , i’ll talk to him . No yellinq cause seriously yellinq doesnt qet yu no where . If love was the issue between these the kid , i cant interfare & would not interfare . But i surely be fine if he tells me thinqs about her & the relationship , so trust can be there .
