Tom & Jerry: What is the best parrot for hand raising and teaching to talk? Available in Tasmania Australia?
Looking to buy a parrot as a companion and to teach to talk. Prefer a medium sized bright colored parrot.
Can anyone suggest one?
Thanks 😀

Bright, talking, good for hand raising. All this tells me you’re VERY new with parrots! I have a very bright parrot with a VERY big vocab myself & I can tell you now there is a hell of a lot more to parrots than that. they’re very complex & in the wrong care can be absolutely terrible. It’s usually the very pretty bright & capable of talk parrots that get re homed because people don’t realize what they actually have to do to care for them on a daily basis.
I suggest a small one to start. medium to large birds take a lot more care than ‘bright, talking parrots’.
If you want all of this, it is something YOU have to work at. It isn’t something that comes naturally to them & without the correct knowledge about the specific species bird you get, then you can easily make huge errors & have a screaming, plucking, aggressive bird on your hands.
PLEASE do your research on the bird that is suitable to your home & lifestyle first. There is NO easy to care for medium sized parrot. Any parrot is capable to speech when taught & it can take a great deal of teaching but even within the best talkers, there is never a guarantee yours will actually talk. They talk if they choose to.

An Australian King Parrot male. Won’t cost you an arm and a leg. Buy it direct from a breeder. Wrong time of the year to get one now for hand raising by yourself. But you might be able to buy one that has already been hand raised and possibly starting to talk. Make sure the breeder has a vet certificate to show that the bird has been surgically sexed as a male. The male is brightly coloured when mature. The young males and females look like an adult female. Look up King Parrot on the Web to see pics of the birds. Young ones won’t be available until around September. Hope this helps.Answer by joewebb
If you are a first time owner all the birds name above is not for you.You want a smaller parrot. No matter what you get it going to take at least one hour a day of your time just to keep him happy Then add all the other stuff, it isnt easy.
