Jonny: What is the best bike to make a bobber out of? And also best bike for a chopper project?
Looking to start on a little project I have wanted to do for a while now. I am looking to build my own bike and I am interested in making it the bobber style or a chopper. Wondering what bike I should by as the main project. I heard virago’s are good. Any suggestions. I plan on buying an old beat bike and rebuilding. Any other suggestions on how to go about it would be great. Thanks

find an old evo shovel or pan basket case. if it has a running powertrain, you can make an entire scratch bike for like $ 6K including a new rigid frame. the only suited jappy stuff for that is a honda cb750… the rest is just goofy wierd contraptions that look like garbage. you could also look for an old triumph or bsa, they make for cool customs
It’s hard to beat an old Triumph, but the Yamaha XS650 also makes a fine platform. Lots of Omar’s Street Tracker bits also lend themselves to bobbers.Answer by curmudgeon55
Bobber and choppers- old classics were the Harleys and English twins. The XLCH was factory version of bobbed XLH, Superglide was another as based on Glide models. The Vtwin Viragoes now can be styled similar to old ones, the old Yamaha 650 twins can be trimmed like the old English BSA and Triumphs. In mid 70s the Honda 750/4s were used as base for bobbers and cafe racers, worked fairly good. Chopper treatment with long fronts didn’t seem to be as popular although Franks forks sold some extended Honda tubes. Local guy has a bobber styled 750 or 1000 Suzuki he rides around town close to old English bike styling with 2 extra cylinders. Some of riders in local sort of generic outlaw clubs runing large Jap Vtwin choppers as alternative to Harleys- parts are easier to get cheap and they are fast, police issueing tickets for 120, 130 mph radar tags.Answer by mikesbikes2ride
Virago, or get an older Yamaha Vstar or Road Star. Those bikes will run forever, have more power than a HD, and are air cooled, giving them an old school look.Answer by bluff mike
There’s nothing as fine as a Honda 750-4 chopper. The engine is bullet proof, looks great and doesn’t leak oil. There are lots of store-bought custom items, including frames, available.Answer by J.R.
Find either an old triumph, yamaha xs, honda 750, or try and find you an old kawasaki kz 750 vertical twin.Answer by imd14bikes
As others have said, you really should look into the Yamaha XS650.
do a search for xs650 on yahoo and you’ll find some great examples of custom bikes.
