Assuming you’re in the United States and I’m speaking in terms of California.
The best way to learn is to take a motorcycle class. In California there is a nominal charge and provided you pass the skills portion of the training, you will get a certificate that you can take to the DMV that waives the skills portion motorcycle driver’s license test. The class provides motorcycles for the training.
You can get a motorcycle permit (in California) without a motorcycle. You would only need a motorcycle if you need take the skills portion for the driver’s license.
Answer by Mr. SmartypantsYou didn’t say where you were. And it makes a difference because the laws are different in every country. My answer will assume you’re in the US.
You don’t learn to ride a motorcycle by taking a class. You learn by doing, that’s the only way. The class teaches you some good safety habits to keep you safe while you learn on your own. And safety is important, so the class is not a bad idea. But it’s only like one weekend or several weeknights, and that’s not nearly enough to actually learn to ride.
You want to get a motorcycle. Get an old used one so you won’t feel bad when if you drop it. Get a learner’s permit. Ride the bike slowly around a quiet neighborhood with not too much traffic. The slower you go, the more time you have to make decisions, so stay in 1st and 2nd gear. Ride around until all the controls are ‘automatic’–so for instance when you see you need to stop, you don’t have to spend a second or two thinking ‘Hmmm , now which of these gizmos is the brake?’
After six months you take your written test and your riding test and get your license. In the meanwhile you are restricted to riding only in daylight hours, not on the freeway, you can’t carry a passenger, etc. Different places have different restrictions.
Just about anyone can learn to ride a motorcycle. It’s not really hard at all. If you’ve never ridden a bicycle, I’d suggest you start out on one of those, at least to learn balancing and steering. If you can drive a car with a manual clutch that will help, but you can learn clutching and shifting on a motorcycle just as well.
You can’t rent a motorcycle, at least that I know of. We have places near where I live that do rent motorcycles, but they are rented by the day, and they are pretty expensive (like $ 150/day). Plus you need a motorcycle license to rent one. So you can’t do that for learning to ride. You really need your own bike.
