Bill: What is the average annual cost of owning a pony?
Please include the initial startup costs, plus the fact that the pony will reside in a commercial stable 10 miles away from my house.
Thank you some for the detailed and useful answers. I may need to lease a horse instead.

Cost of pony
Tack
Trailer
Truck
Board per month
Farrier bills per month
Annual vet check ups at minimum
Freak accident costs (colic, broken leg, etc.)
You can do the math according to where you live. I have no idea how much your pony will cost, if you want to buy a trailer/truck, how much your board will be, or if your pony will have shoes.
Answer by Horse FlyIf you have to ask, you probably don’t have enough money.
If you had enough money, you’d just go get the pony.
And no one here knows where you live, so the only one who can tell you how much boarding will be is the boarding place you choose.

Here are the calculations I have done for myself. Please keep in mind that there are ALWAYS unexpected costs and you should be prepared for them. Also, hay priced differ greatly from place to place and season to season.
Yearly:
$ 1740 Boarding
$ 1500 Pellets/bedding
$ 250 Coggins/vacc/boosters
$ 200 Wormers
$ 220 Teeth floating
$ 600 Hoof trims (natural)
$ 225 Memberships
6415/12 = $ 534.58/month
One time:
$ 3000 emergency vet savings ???
$ 250 Safety Deposit
$ 30 Saddle soap
$ 25 Fly spray
$ 20 Lunge line
$ 15 Lunge whip
$ 50 Grooming kit/box
$ 25 Stall chain (rubber)
$ 800 Trailering
$ 4215
This is in the Canadian dollar for me, and I have to add tax. I’ll let you do those calculations 😉 Hope I’ve helped you!
