Master Cloud: What is causing my father muscle pains upon waking up in the morning?
My father complains of bad muscle pain when he wakes up in the morning. The muscles on the whole side of his body which he has been sleeping on ache. Everything else feels fine. They only start to hurt after he has woken up and starts to move around, not during the night.
What could be causing this, and what can be done? He is 55; does not smoke, is at a normal weight, and is in very good health (although we tell him he doesn’t eat enough).
Again, only the side of his body which he has been sleeping on hurts.

It may not be muscle pains. It may be caused by vascular pain, or it may be arthritis. It could also be a mattress that is too soft. No matter what, he should tell his doctor what is happening and when so he can be evaluated properly.
Unfortunately, much of it has to do with age, even though he’s not that old. If the problem persists he definitely needs to see a doc about it but I would venture to say that it’s normal and that he may need to incorporate some sort of stretching into his morning and/or evening routine to help loosen up those muscles a little. It may seem kind of weird to him at first however, the benefits can be tremendous. Good luck to your dad.Answer by caitrosebud
I know a lot of people that ache after waking up– sometimes it’s just because you aren’t moving around enough.
More water may help; I know that sometimes cramps come from not drinking enough water, so maybe being hydrated would also help this problem.
Hope the aching stops soon!
