Animal Addiction: What horse breed is best for first time horse owners?
I have been working with horses for a few years and now I really want one of my own. I know all of the work and expenses that are included. I have been researching Friesians, I know expensive right, but I believe they are worth the money. Please any Friesian owners out there tell me about owning one first hand and if it would make a good first time horse?

A good first time horse is the horse you think is best suited to YOUR needs. If you like Friesians then I say go for it! My personal preference is Arabians. I would never have anything else. Be sure you are buying from a reputable breeder and that the horse is well suited to your individual needs.
I dont know much about Friesians but I do know that Appaloosas are BEAUTIFUL and very loving. We have a Black and Whit Appy stallion. And he acts amazing for riders and in the field. He only acts like a stallion when a mare gets close to his field or he is about to be bred.
But they are a very compasionate breed.Answer by enigma
I think the whole breed preference is almost like racism. Every horse is an individual just as people are. Not all arabians are smart, not all drafts are calm, and not all Quarter horses are perfect for ranch work.
When looking for a first horse, look at the horse’s training – does it do what you want it to do? If not, how much time, money, etc will it take to get it there? Then how is the horse’s conformation? It may be the best trained horse in the world, but if it’s not built to do what you want it to do, it’s going to have physical problems down the road. Next, is the personality. Do you get along with this horse? I’ve known some really great horses, that I jsut did not like. We couldn’t connect, and thus could never really reach our potential. I’ve had to resell several horses, do to conflict of personality. Other personality traits you should look at is how personable is this horse? Do you feel safe having friends or family around it, or is it a one person horse? Just some things to keep in mind…
I would love to recommend a breed (I have a favorite just like anyone else) but there are always going to be exceptions to the rule. So look at the individual, not the breed, and you might be surprised by finding the perfect horse in a breed you weren’t expecting.Answer by Katie
i your first horse should be based on what you are going to do. maybe you want to do team penning, gymkhana, shows, jumping, or just for pleasure. i prefer quarter horses, because they are sweet and gentle. paints and appys are really good too…Answer by goodness gracious
I would say quarter horses just because they are typically gentle and easy to manage, but it depents on the type of riding you want to do. Friesians arre mostly for dressage as you know.Answer by beyence
You should get a quarter horse. They are very good for all kinds of fun and games but if you are loooking for a horse to go to shows then don’t get a quarter horse. For show jumping i would say dutch warmbloods, for barrel racing, quarter horses, for racing, thourbreds and for dressie…mabie a morgan or a freisian…

Answer by kattelements,i agree with enigma and also sparky.
you cannot judge a horse just by its breed, not all of them are the same. you really just need to know what you want to do with your horse and if they can do what you want well.
breed really shouldn’t matter too much.
