German Shepard, we have three and although they are kinda big, they are really protective of there owner and can stay in the house all day long.

Well any but the best thing is to make sure it can’t get into anything around the house and make sure it has something like it’s toys to keep it busy lots of food and water for it and some where to go to the bathroom.

1: Invest in an alarm.
2: No puppy needs to be left alone for more than 2 hours; if it’s an adult then every breed can as long as it’s had plenty of exercise before being left alone, and after. As well as PLENTY chew toys, mental stimulation, and some activity on the side so she can give her dog more stimulation. Like obdience classes, or doggy socialization classes. If not, all breeds and mutts will become insanely bored, and destructive.

You can choose adamant breeds(Link 1. Most of them can be left alone for a long time) or more protective breeds(Link 2. Most of them are larger breed). The choice is yours.

SHOW HER THE FOLLOWING.
IF you can take your dog for a LONG walk before you leave it. Come home at lunchtime, pay a professional walker or take it to a day crèche a dog will be OK whilst you are at work. However you MUST take two weeks off work when you first get it.

If this creates a financial problem and you cannot do this DON’T GET A DOG. Any dog that is left alone all day will become an antisocial hooligan and at the very least wreck your house. To prevent this some cruel people cage their dogs and then they suffer from bowel and bladder problems.

Imagine how you would feel if you were isolated all day without a television, a telephone or a book to read. It would drive you mad, that is how a dog will feel if you cannot provide it with company for eight long hours.

Answer by GreyhoundAdopter
Most any adult dog with any sort of bladder control can easily stay home while the family is gone to work or school. Dogs get used to the schedule and will just sleep away the day while the owners are gone to work. You can just leave a TV or Radio playing if you want the dog to have something to listen to.

I would suggest your friend adopt a adult dog from a shelter or rescue. A puppy can not be left alone for hours like this, as they can not hold their bowels or bladder for long periods of time. Disposition and energy level is more important than the breed of dog.
