dtappen12ollydonkey: How can I get my quarter mare to be friends with my shetland pony mare?
I just bought a shetland pony and my quarter horse wants to bite and kick at her, does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get my horse to adjust to living with a shetland pony. Both are mares, the pony is a 11 month old and is desperately trying to be friends. I am worried my quarter mare will hurt the pony and I don’t want to keep the pony stabled all the time. Please help !

Yea, she will hurt her, so I hate to say it but you need to just get them used to each other by tying them so they’re in contact but can’t kick each other, eventually boss mare will settle down.
Unfortunately, some horses never get used to ponies, they consider them to be like dogs. However, if you can put the two side by side with safe fencing or walls that allow them to see, but not touch, the mare may become accustomed to the pony. Sometimes moving the mare to a new place and putting them side by side may help. She may be just protecting ‘her’ space. Putting them in neutral territory may help the mare accept the pony. Make sure the mare has no other friends other than you and the pony (in safe quarters) and that also might change her mind. Good Luck.
