Kristy: What does society generally see as the ideal wife nowadays?
Like in the 50’s it was the soft-spoken, feminine, wife and mother who stayed home and was the best cook, housekeeper, etc. Always had her hair done i.e. June on Leave it to Beaver vacuming in pearls.

What about nowadays? How is the ideal wife portrayed do you think?

Hm, based on the shows that I watch…..I have to say that if I wasn’t an American and I began to watch American shows to see what the men were looking for in a wife I’d say:

A fake woman. Plastic surgery, lots of makeup, hair always dyed, lots of manicures and pedicures, always willing to do anything to get what she wants…etc.

I really do hope this isn’t what men are looking for or else I’m SOL.

Apart from being the best cook and most meticulous housekeeper, it looks like the ideal wife should also earn loads of money, be a super-fit athlete, work for various important causes, raise amazing kids, and for a lot of men out there, she must also be great in bed. Ah, society.

really depends on the social status of the people you question but I believe cleaning, cooking and child rearing are still major woman’s duties but man has taken more responsibility.

These days, on top of always looking her best, even while cleaning, cooking, and changing diapers, the ideal wife must also bring home six figures a year and stop at nothing to have that perfect super model body.

The first purpose of feminism was to allow women to choose. Little did our foremothers know that we’d be forced to choose between being a housewife and doing everything. It seems that in our modern society, having children and getting married is still expected of women. Yes, we are allowed our careers and dreams now, but they come at a price: no sleep and double duty. Society refuses to release its grip on the idea that women are expected to bear children. These days, a woman who has no interest in having children is still a social pariah.

Society is not yet accepting of a career-only woman.

I don’t wear pearls and my hair is brushed nicely when I vacuum and I very rarely raise my voice to my husband. My meals according to my kids and husband are rather tasty and I don’t work outside the home. Nowadays wives are women who want to pursue their own careers; sometimes leaving the kids ad their husbands to the wayside. It usually means a lot of stress, cause truth be told a woman cannot be in two places at once.

Works for pay in an exciting job, has slightly obnoxious kids that she sees for 20 minutes a day (but who adore her regardless) is a perfect size 6, always wears makeup and sexy clothes, and acts like she could live without her guy and be just fine. Her house is spotlessly clean, since no one actually spends any time there. She isn’t “clingy” or “dependent”, yet is still able to be completly vulnerable and loving to her boyfriend – not her husband. The ideal “wife” is a live-in girlfreind, you see, and couldn’t care less if she ever gets married. She spends very little time on her relationships, and spends every second trying to make *herself* happy, but magically, her relationships all work perfectly anyways.

Mr. Cleaver was hooked on Valium – as were millions of other ‘housewives’ between the 1950’s – 1980’s.

Women today have more opportunities available; they are not ‘housewives’ married to the ‘house’ anymore.

Mrs. Cleaver was not only hooked on “diet pills” but she likely started drinking as soon as her husband left for work and was often drunk or tipsy by noon. A lot of stay-at-home mothers did this in the 1950s and 1960s.

A woman who can multi-task. Wives nowadays are expected to be able to take on all the typical male responsibilites – finance, career – whilst still carrying out the typical female ones – looking after children, keeping house, looking attractive. My own opinion is that this isn’t possible; something will be neglected, and it’s usually the children.
