What does lover mean where it is used in the film the dirty dozen?

Mina: What does lover mean where it is used in the film the dirty dozen?
In the film, The Dirty Dozen, the word lover is used at least twice as a derogatory label. It is used once for the prisoners and once when Bronson’s character is describing the medic he killed. I have yet to find a reference to this word being used as a derogatory label in either a slang dictionary or a regular dictionary. Does anyone have a definition for this use of the word as a derogatory slang word?
